When the Cheap Bastard’s long-awaited book “The American Dream: Get Fat for Less” finally makes its ways to book stores, you can be sure there will be a chapter devoted to Naples, Fla.

You see, my friends, there’s something to be said for cities with a large retirement population: A lot of people wear their belts around their chest. OK, there’s two things that can be said, because the deals are everywhere.

In Naples, the deals are all about food. Being that the Cheap Bastard watches his waistline (it recently hit the floor), cheap meals are always a priority. Right now in Naples, the catch-phrase is “Early-bird dinners.” This works out well for the non-retired amongst us, who translate “early-bird dinner” to “lunch.”

While there are deals at most restaurants, a truly outstanding one can be found at one of the several Mel’s Diner ((239) 643-9898) locations. Most of their main courses can be had for $5.99 between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. Also, Gabriello’s of New York ((239) 596-9144) offers a menu with entrees for $15 between the hours of 4:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.

With travel destinations experiencing the post-Labor Day blahs, local establishments are making up for it wherever they can. An important reminder: If you are traveling and looking for a good dining deal, make sure to check the local paper. They’ll usually have coupons.

4:30 p.m. for an early-bird dinner OCB? Are you crazy? Tim McDonald's already been in bed for the night for an hour after having stayed up to catch the late (noon) news.

Yeah, and what's the deal with Jennier Mario's hair?

Yes, Tim, I have more hair than you. You really need to just get over it.

And learn to spell my name right, while you're at it.

I guess it's time for me to get a new rug. Too many people are noticing.

Probably a good idea, Tim. Some advice from a Cheap Bastard? This time, buy the whole thing.

Hey El Cheapo -
There are a bunch of those 'early bird' things here in Tampa/St. Pete, too. One of the best is a top-rated Chinese buffet that goes for $7.99 on the EB Special. BTW, I thought the comment calling these things "lunch" was hilarious!

On last note - congrats on that 'official blogger' thing.
