Cheapness starts in your car: Fuel-economy tips

The Cheap Bastard has a lead foot, which is ironic, as the rest of the Bastard body resembles cream cheese stuffed into a trash bag.

But with gas prices going through the roof, most of us are letting off the accelerator. Not me, mind you, as I’ve been a gas siphoner for years, and siphoners just don’t care about gas prices, or fresh breath.

But, because I realize that not everyone enjoys using a garden hose as a gas-tank straw, here are a couple tips on how to conserve fuel while driving.

First of all, be chill. Going the posted speed limit may seem Urkel-ish to many of us, but the fact is this: Blasting along over the speed limit, zipping through traffic, etc., will use more fuel, and will likely only save you scant minutes of driving time.

Second, stop with the idling already. If you are going to wait for more than 30 seconds, turn the car off. You’ll save gas and help beat those blasted terrorists.

Finally, keep your car lightweight and wind-resistant, like the fabulous Jennifer Mario. When driving at a higher speed, shut the windows for better wind resistance. Also, pay attention to any extra weight in the car. That body you have stuck in the trunk is hurting your fuel mileage. Polluted rivers exist for a reason, people!

There are tons of gas-saving ideas out there, so feel free to send some in.

dumb a$$, you use more fuel starting a car than you do idling for a short time...and as is true w/ any type of engine or motor, starting/turning on is the most stressful time, so the more often you start it, the more wear and tear you are incurring...save 2 pennies today so you can spend a grand tomorrow...great tip

Great work RJ! Thanks for giving us the 1950s version of the internal cumbustion engine.

However, it saddens me greatly to have to inform you that technology has advanced some. Like the Internet, for example. Now, you can type in simple questions into what the kids call a "search engine" and get answers.

Now here's a game for you. See where you can find this quote:

"Ten seconds of idling uses more fuel than restarting your engine."

Or perhaps this one:

"Frequently restarting has little impact on engine components like the battery and the starter motor. Component wear caused by restarting the engine is estimated to add $10 per year to the cost of driving, money likely to be saved many times over due to fuel savings."

Please note also, that you may leave a "Search Engine" idling for as long as you wish.

Does Jennifer Mario like being known as "wind-resistant"?

Beautiful biting response to RJ, who must be as old as I. My initial reaction on the idling/restarting pont was identical to his.

Don't forget clean air filters, frequent oil changes, and a frequent dashboard massage (cars like them.)

The best thing you can do with your vehicle is to get on the first available interstate and wrap yourself around a concrete pole. That's my tip.

wow FB, if you found it on the internet it MUST be true...since you were so kind to introduce me to this wonderous thing called a search engine, i tried to look for some other "FACTS" and i learned there has been an increase in godzilla sightings in recent years...guess i better up my "inordinately large monsters" coverage on my home owners insurance...

so let me guess, you found one web site offering a particular slant which agrees w/ yours, and voila, all of a sudden it is fact and gospel that you are going to spread?...

while i'm on a rant, how many times have i been told that powering down my servers weekly will have absolutely no affect on their electrical components?...hmmm, we only power down at most bi-weekly, and usually monthly if no issues are found/reported, to refresh the OS...otherwise those things run 24/7, and in 6 years i've had less than a handful of maintenance calls for hardware failure...WAY fewer than buddies of mine who work at places where they power down weekly, if not more than once a week...at least once a month they have a server that doesn't come back up, if not more often...but this is what they were told so it must be right, eh?

is a car and a server the same thing? NO...my point being tho i'll trust my personal experience more than i will take someone's opinion who i don't know, who can't back it up, and is just selling their very own slant on an item because it's what they believe...until i see evidence to change my mind, i won't...
