Memorial Day should equal free golf for Veterans

Tuesday May 31, 2005 | 15:01:22 170 words, 2010 views
Win a free golf book!

Another Memorial Day’s come and gone with most people blissfully barbecuing away with little clue about what the long weekend’s really about.

Golf should step up as an industry and remind everyone. Veterans should play for free at any course of their choosing over Memorial Day weekend. What better way to show appreciation for the men and women who’ve served than giving up one of your precious weekend tee times?

Some courses have already embraced the idea. The Legacy Golf Courses at Cragun’s in Minnesota have been letting veterans play for free on Memorial Day weekend for years. But this should be a industry wide trend rather than a newsworthy anomaly.

Sure, Memorial Day is an important weekend for course revenue. But sometimes doing the right thing, building some goodwill for golf, means more to the longterm bottom line. And if it’s impossible to do it on this holiday weekend, set aside another weekend (when it’s not 20 degrees out) where vets play your course for nothing more than a handshake.

Outstanding, Chris. Great idea. Bold piece. We all should do it to remember the sacrifice of those who died to protect our freedom.

Nice sentiment but I wonder...Father's Day = Free Golf for Dad? Mother's Day? What of Secretaries Day and National Butt-Out Day for the would be Non-Smokers...

I'm just saying...

I would be happy to see a memorial day of free golf given to those that have brought us the freedom that we enjoy. Why not figure out the revenue lost of a golf course and apply a memorial day charge to a greens fee up to the amount to cover the lost revenue. I would be happy to pay that extra charge as a sincere thank you to those that have defended my rights as an american. A sincere thank you to all veterans and also to members of the armed forces!

Let's see vets are equal to secretaries. and dad's and non-smokers? My home course, in florida, prefers free golf on veterans day to memorial day. I appreciate it since I play so slow due to injuries. It's probably just a paper cut.
