Paula Creamer once again delivers on the big stage, Michelle Wie who? Solheim Cup begs the question
Sunday September 11, 2005 | 19:16:30 219 words, 3596 views
Paula Creamer pushed the U.S. to Solheim Cup victory, beating European “star” Laura Davies so soundly in Sundays singles that Davies must have been contemplating retirement on the spot. It all showed why it’s no stretch to declare that Paula Creamer is better than Michelle Wie now, will always be better than Michelle Wie. And this isn’t just a knock on the no-win Wie. It’s acceptance of how good Paula Creamer is and how vastly underhyped she’s been. Yahoo Sports’ lead story on the Solheim Cup noted that American golf may have a new star now in Paula Creamer. Apparently, the folks at Yahoo follow their women’s golf about as closely as government officials tracked Hurricane Katrina. Hello? Paula Creamer’s played like a star her entire rookie season. At 19, she already understands the art of winning, what it takes to turn good shots into trophies. And yes, it’s safe to wonder what tournament National Golf Editor Tim McDonald was watching or reading about with his geezers’ love for the old foggies. Creamer set the tone for this tournament, guaranteed victory, brushed off Beth Daniel’s excuses whines and won the biggest match of all. The Solheim Cup was all about the future of women’s golf, not its tired past. And the future does not need Michelle Wie to win. Comments:

Well Chris I will bite.
What has Michelle Wie got to do with how well creamer played. Absolutely nothing. Even though the US managed to win it was a struggle. Playing Wendy Ward was obviously the wrong choice but the US managed to win without her input. Michelle Wie will have a big part in the US winning the Solheim Cup in the future, and if you believe otherwise you must be dumb. What's it to be? Alan M

Bye the way Chris
People do realise you only insert Wie's name in your blogs to get a good response, unless you are really a fan. Try writing one without her name and see what happens. Alan M

Let's just talk about Paula Creamer. Did anyone notice pink caps on Sunday--worn not by the Americans, but by the Europeans. I think Paula Creamer had a good enough year that the Americans could have been the ones to wear pink caps or some other pink apparel for at least one day. I know they had some horrid black and white striped shorts the first day. I don't remember what they worry Saturday.
Comment from: Rex [Visitor]
Saturday they wore the red shirts.
As for Michelle, there is no doubt she is talented, but there is no way of knowing now if she will ever play in the LPGA, which is the only way to become part of the Solheim cup team. Michelle is in the future of women's golf; there is no doubt that Paula is very much a part of the present.
Comment from: Karen [Visitor]
What is with your obsession with Michelle Wie ? She was not on the Solheim team, and she's in school right now. In fact, she hasn't played competitive golf in over a month! Why are you still talking about her ?? Michelle is the future of women's golf so maybe you should wait to talk about her you know IN THE FUTURE.
Comment from: Marilyn [Visitor]
Michelle who? Oh ya, she's the one that wants to play with the men, thinks she to good to play with the women, so how can she be the future of womens golf.
There is no question that Paula Craamer will be or should I say is the next big superstar in womens golf...just as Laura Davis, after she figures out what hit her today. I'm sure Paula would clean Wie's clock too.

** maybe you should wait to talk about [Michelle Wie] you know IN THE FUTURE. ** Hey, Karen. Are you gonna take your own advice? Anybody else? I didn't think so. The fact is, America has three tough young phenoms already: Paula Creamer, Christina Kim and Natalie Gulbis. And don't forget veterans such as Pat Hurst, who came from behind to win an epic match, and Christie Kerr, who seems to be regaining her touch. And if more young players such as Morgan Pressel, or Brittany Lang, or THE ONE WHOM KAREN DEMANDS WE DO NOT DISCUSS, make a big impact later, all the better. But for those of us who have to deal with reality -- rather than projected fantasies that may or may not happen -- those Solheim rookies are excellent young players who have their best golf ahead of them. Bottom line: Our fledgling American gunslingers were pivotal to the U.S. returning the Solheim Cup to its rightful place. -George

George, I'm refering to Chris Baldwin's constant criticizing of Michelle Wie just out of the blue...take a chill pill please-I'm not criticizing your precious Paula Creamer, in fact I like her. I just want to know exactly what Paula Creamer's success in the Solheim cup have anything to do with Michelle ? And Marilyn Michelle Wie has played in 7 LPGA events on her summer vacation, and 2 PGA events--that's hardly ignoring the women's game.
Comment from: James [Visitor]
Marilyn, Maybe you should learn how to spell Paula Creamer's name first before you start spouting your mouth about her... Anyone else think Marilyn and George are really Chris Baldwin ? The tone of their posts are very similar... just an observation.

Great article and thank you for pointing out how Paula Creamer is the news of this year and probably many years to come. She deserves to be in the Headlines of Womens Golf.
There will be plenty of time for Michelle Wie to have Headlines when she does something to deserve them. I hope Tom Lehman learns something from Nancy Lopez on how to Captain a team of individual stars.

I hate to even post here, and give Baldie more attention--but please don't fall for this BS- I just want everyone to keep this conversation between George and Chris--don't lower yourself by participating in this pointless debate. Its just people with low self esteem participating in the assassination of a person's character. Its like the old nerdy guy version of Mean Girls. Don't bite--I hope my post is the last one on this article. James C. and Alan --I know you guys have some great points and you want to defend them--but post them at some other bloggers article -they're just baiting you. Don't fall for it .

** I'm refering to Chris Baldwin's constant criticizing of Michelle Wie just out of the blue...take a chill pill please-I'm not criticizing your precious Paula Creamer, in fact I like her. ** Hey, Karen, take a brain pill, please. Where did I say you were criticizing Paula Creamer? You are really getting hyper-sensitive and reading things into this that are non-existent. And plus, after the weekend Creamer had, and the leadership she showed as the star of that team, anybody criticizing Creamer would be pretty much of a joke. -George

What could Tom Lehman learn from Nancy Lopez about being the captain of a team of individual stars? There is only one star on the LPGA and she played for the European team. It is true that there is one other female who has been compared to Tiger Woods, 15 year old Michelle Wie--but she is not an LPGA member, and she was left off the American team. If you are suggesting that Lehman leave Tiger Woods off the Ryder Cup team, I don't believe he has that option. The American's did win without Michelle Wie this year when the Cup was held on American soil. Don't expect it to be as easy next time when the Cup is held in Europe. PREDICTION: If the Americans play in 2007 without Michelle Wie, they will lose. If Michelle Wie is on the team, they will win. Michelle Wie would negate the Europeans home course advantage. Most of the fans wouldn't be there to root for the Europeans; they would be there to see Michelle Wie.

The American Solheim team was enhanced by a qualities seldom seen in golf circles - an air of enthusiasm and cheerleading that was as infectious as the quality of play.
Although it is a distant prospect, one can only wonder the nature of coaching that would be provided by Paula Creamer or Christina Kim. In the more immediate future, I'm rooting for Juli Inkster when her turn comes to coach a Solheim Cup team.

"Paula Creamer is better than Michelle Wie now, will always be better than Michelle Wie".
Must be nice to be able to see the future.!!!! Why is it that Michelle does better than Paula at the majors? .... and by the way, the MAJORS are the MOST IMPORTANT events.

Fine --I'll admit it- I hang out here all day because I AM IN LOVE with Chris Baldwin. Those beady eyes, the scraggly thinning hair, the nostril hair coming out of his nose-- its just so damn sexy! If loving him is wrong- I don't want to be right!!

Guys and gals
This blog is heading in the direction of the twilight zone. So to bring it back on track let's discuss the up comming Samsung World Championships. Our favourite golfer will be making a comeback after a couple of months in school. Go Wie. Another top 3 finish I would guess. Win, maybe not, does it really matter. Having attended school full time instead of playing golf full time her chances must be slim, but because she is such a phenom anything is possible. Alan

*When one of the Wie Warriors whines that somebody is projecting someone's performance into the unknowable future, it's time for the dogs to start lying down with the cats and get ready for the end times.*
So basically you think it is okay for Chris to predict the future, but you think people who say, "look at all Wie's potential" are wrong!!!! You are the one with double standards. Glad you and Chris are getting it together by the way.

** So basically you think it is okay for Chris to predict the future, but you think people who say, "look at all Wie's potential" are wrong!!!! ** Norman, please reassure us that you don't have the sort of reading comprehension deficiency that is suggested by your comments. Let's review, shall we? Baldwin: "Paula Creamer is better than Michelle Wie now, will always be better than Michelle Wie". Norman: Must be nice to be able to see the future.!!!! George: *When one of the Wie Warriors whines that somebody is projecting someone's performance into the unknowable future, it's time for the dogs to start lying down with the cats and get ready for the end times.* * Norman: You are the one with double standards. * Nope. You are, Wie Warrior. You and the other Wie Warriors who are projecting WRT Wie are making statements that are as dumb as Chris Baldwin's comment that's quoted above. I repeat, Norman: You, James C., and the others are as dumb as Baldwin when you attempt such projections. Got it? In another thread, I've opined that it is ridiculous -- and frankly, infantile -- to suggest that any athlete is better now and will always be better than another athlete, in cases where one could arguably say they are essentially playing at roughly the same level, are approximate contemporaries, about the same age, playing the same sport, etc. (i.e., Bonds vs. Griffey, Montana vs. Elway, M. Johnson vs. L. Bird, etc. If you study the careers of these six players carefully, there have been times when one clearly seemed better than the other, then the other way, then the other way again.) I also opined that it is ridiculous - and infantile -- to make comparisons between what a player has already accomplished, especially when those accomplishments are extraordinary, and what a player could accomplish at some unknown future time. For example, it would have been ridiculous to say that Bobby (not Barry) Bonds would certainly be a better player than Willie Mays in the majors because there were certain things that Bobby had done in the minor leagues that were better than what Willie Mays had accomplished. Just as it would have been ridiculous to say Barry would automatically have been a better player than Willie based solely on Barry's minor league career. Now, of course, it's turned out that Barry has hit more career home runs than Willie. But we can now say agree that Barry is more of an offensive powerhouse than Willie because of what Barry has done in the MAJOR leagues compared to what Willie did in the MAJOR leagues. there is no way WITH CERTAINTY that you could have made those assurances when Barry was coming up from Triple A. That would be the crude equivalent to where amateur golfers would be today. My suggestion has always been to give the stars of today their due and if you have someone or someones who are coming up later and they succeed, then give them their due then. Finally: Take the current big three of American phenom golf: Creamer, Kim and Gulbis, add veterans such as Kerr and never-say-die Hurst, and mix in future potential top-flight players such as Pressel, Wie and Lang, that would be quite a show, and quite a rivalry with the international Soremstams of the world. Even people as thick-headed as the Wie Warriors and Chris Baldwin might find that compelling sports entertainment. (not holding my breath, tho) -George

I would hope that Creamer is better than Wie. One is a nineteen year old, full time professional golfer the other is a fifteen year old, full time high school student who plays a dozen tournaments a year. For me, comments comparing Wie to members of the LPGA just show the lack of depth on the women's tour.
Comment from: James Coulthard [Visitor]
GEORGE The player who is having a spectacular season on the LPGA is Annika. Paula has 2 wins in 19 tournaments. That is an accomplishment, but many players have had better seasons, including Annika this year. What impresses us is the fact that she has done this as an 18/19 year old rookie. We are impressed by things such as the fact that she was the 2nd youngest winner of an LPGA Tournamnet. Leave age out of the equation and we are not nearly as impressed. And the reason we are impressed is because of the potential, not her accomplishments which have been exceeded by many players. Unless you are projecting a bright future for Paula Creamer, you should be focussing on today's star: Annika.
TOMMY It is not exactly lack of depth on the LPGA that is involved with Michelle Wie. Against the LPGA's best, Annika, in head to head, Michelle Wie finished behind her 3 times, then tied, and then finished ahead two times in a row. Michelle Wie is very close to the woman who has been called the best ever in what looked to be her greatest year ever.
Comment from: James Coulthard [Visitor]
Here is an interesting stat. Paula Creamer has also finished ahead of Annika twice(Evian and the US Open) tied once at Wendy's, and Annika has finished ahead of Paula 9 times.

The player who is having a spectacular season on the LPGA is Annika. ** Absolutely! Except to be correct, you needed to say "A player" , etc. ** Unless you are projecting a bright future for Paula Creamer, you should be focussing on today's star: Annika. ** So that means that if you, James, are NOT going to project, you, James, should be focusing on today's American young phenom: Paula Creamer. BTW, when I Google "Coulthard" and "Wie" the results are pretty disturbing. You've really got a thing for Ms. Michelle, don't you James? I can see why you think Wie is better already than Paula. You think Wie is already better than Annika!! Then let's throw in your ability to read Paula Creamer's mind, which you've expressed in a couple of different places, and one really has to start worrying about you. Here are just a couple of examples of how reality has become distorted for you: 7-31-05 from James C. Michelle Wie is only 15. Since the last comments Michelle has finished ahead of Annika in 2 straight tournaments. 4 strokes up at the Evian Masters and 1 stroke ahead at the British. They tied in the previous tournament(the US Open). She also finished 4 ahead of Annika is last year's Kraft Nabisco--but it is now 3 tournaments in a row that Annika has failed to best Michelle. 8-13-05 from James C. You admit that Annika is the dominant woman of her generation--and the record shows that Michelle is already better than Annika. Even when Michelle was playing her worst at the US Women's Open, Annika could no longer beat her. At the Evian and the British, Michelle beat Annika two tournaments in a row. At the British Open Annika was two strokes ahead of Michelle after 71 holes and could not even tie Michelle. Perhaps Annika will improve more than Michelle over the next few months and overtake her--but I doubt it. Certainly Michelle is not going to have any fear of Annika after these last three tournaments. ***** James, I pray for Michelle Wie's sake that you don't live in Hawaii. Or anywhere west of the Hudson River. Or have access to an airplane or ocean liner. -George

Don't worry about Michelle. She's taler than I am and she can wield a club far better than I can. Since you like Paula Creamer so much, hpw about a challenge. I' sure travel golf will be happy to oblige. Creamer vs. Wie in 2006, Players to be judged based upon performances in tournaments in which they both play. Rules to be decided by the end of 2005. You probably want a point scale which would almost assure some points would be awarded to someone each week to make things more exciting--very generous bonuses could be given for wins. But let us not argue what the standards should be after we have seen the performances.
Comment from: Norman [Visitor]
That's a good idea James, but I'm afraid George would rather spout rubbish than go on a facts based outcome.
If Michelle finishes 2nd at the Samsung, and Creamer finishes 42nd, they will still claim that Wie is a loser and Creamer is the golden girl.

As I read your various postings here and elsewhere, if ignorance is bliss, you must be one happy guy. I guess it is nice you are interested in women's golf but you have such a steep learning curve about golf it's history and traditions that you will be happy for a long time. There is not enough room here to try and educate you but I will only ask that you think about why you feel the need to downgrade others to upgrade someone in this case Michelle Wie. Your obsession with this young girl is a little scary and might suggest that you need help. I certainly hope you never attend a tournament she plays in or at least notify security before going. There will be plenty of time for all of us who enjoy, understand and know golf to see who is the best player because they will all play in tournaments and it will be seen clearly. In the meantime we should enjoy the growth and interest in the LPGA as it best days are ahead. Leave a comment: |
