TravelGolf.com gets first look at Arizona's newly renovated Wigwam

TravelGolf.com isn’t invited to many grand openings. We tend to be a little too honest (no matter what you’ve read elsewhere, every course isn’t great, great, great!), a little too scruffy (have you seen the Cheap Bastard?), a little too irreverent (see BadGolfer).

So sometimes we have to create our own openings. TravelGolf.com recently became the first golf publication to play the newly $5 million renovated Robert Trent Jones Sr. courses at Wigwam Resort.

More than a month before the official hoity toity opening “event” where mainstream golf writers will be able to share golf tips with mayors, TravelGolf.com was out on the Wigwam Gold and Blue Courses. The director of golf wasn’t too thrilled to have us there. The courses were coming out of overseed, still had some rough spots on the greens. In other words, they looked like they might when you play them during parts of the year rather than golf-course-reviewer-prepared perfect.

For the complete look at the new Wigwam courses, stay tuned to GolfArizona.com during the next few weeks.

The Gold Course is much more interesting with its original mammoth Jones bunkering restored, though still not a great Jones. The Blue Course comes across even more quirky than before with a run of holes on the back nine that will keep your driver in the bag and test your shotmaking thinking ability (and patience).
