Los Angeles' smog problem underplayed

Woke up in LA, stepped outside and thought I’d walked right into a mushroom cloud. The smog was that low lying, completely covering buildings.

The fog in San Francisco is even thinner. Not to mention much more pleasant.

Now, of course it’s not like this everyday. But it’s like it enough days. Who wants to golf in this stuff?

You’re much better off taking a road trip to Palm Springs’ clear mountain days or San Diego’s ocean breezes.

I’m all for checking out LA. If you want to try the restaurants (even though they’re not as good as New York, Philadelphia, San Francisco or even Chicago restaurants), see the Getty, stroll Rodeo Drive and work in some golf, go for it. But LA when the main purpose of your trip is golf? That just doesn’t make sense.

I always love it when somebody claims that Los Angeles’ smog problem is overplayed. In truth, it’s underplayed. I lived 20 minutes from Manhattan for years and never saw anything like it.

Come join the movie stars in the exhaust soup!

Just to say Chris, that some of your earlier articles are excellent, and hopefully you will be writing another article on Friday night about the way it really is.

Not only is the air disgusting, but you have to drive their freeways too! BTW, don't limit your California golf to San Diego and the Bay Area... Check out the Central Coast - SLO County was recently rated #1 for golf in California by Golf Digest Magazine! You've got to check out Monarch Dunes - just opened on New Years Day.
