Mike Weir might be the nicest guy on the PGA Tour. He is undoubtedly one of the blandest quotes. When Mike Weir questions something, you can be sure it’s a valid issue.
That’s where the Classic Club - the brand new tournament-owned course for the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic - finds itself leading up to its Sunday final round showcase.
“They got a great piece of land,'’ Weir said. “But it’s an interesting location.”
So interesting that comedian George Lopez couldn’t help but turn it into a routine at his press conference. When Lopez was brought into the media center at the new Classic Club, he quipped, “I think that it’s great that the Tour has finally reached the level where they are secure enough to have a tournament near an outlet mall.”
And Lopez was only warming up.
The Classic Club is right on I-10 the way a tick is on a deer. The road leading to the club is essentially an access road, right along the freeway. It’s more than a little strange pulling up into the lot.
I’m going to reserve judgment because today will be first time I spend a good amount of time on the course, having mostly followed the celebrity rotation in the four-course Bob Hope. Look for a full story on the Classic Club on TravelGolf.com soon, including what the paying customers think of it when it opens Monday.

What does "oh Canada" I miss you so much I moved to Utah want, a bucolic entrance and setting for every course under the sun? Stately pines, oaks, and tumbleweed lining the entrance road? Please, stop your understated whining, Weir.
