Phil Mickelson is God in Phoenix/Scottsdale for the FBR Open

I like Phil Mickelson as a golf story. Really I do. No matter what I’ve wrote about his intestinal fortitude in the past. But the Phil love is getting a tad ridiculous in the Scottsdale-Phoenix resort corridor with the FBR Open in town this week. You wake up here and Phil pops out of your cereal box, smiling, with a “How ya doing, buddy?” I’m not saying I suddenly understand why Mickelson was named one of GQ magazine’s “10 Most Hated Athletes” by their peers … OK, I am saying that. It would get annoying to see this endless Phil love go on and on and on. One of the local TV sports anchors did an hour on Phil Sunday night, an hour, barely mentioning the fact that Tiger Woods made his season debut with another win. This isn’t Phil’s fault of course. He didn’t make the college town adulation go hyperdrive. Then again, he does sort of fuel it … Oh well, I’m sure there are worse things than hearing about Phil Mickelson 24-7 for a week and counting. Just can’t think of any at the moment.

How does he fuel it other than to acknowledge the fans and sign autigraphs....and smile instead of swear....

The only thing I can think of that would be worse, would be to hear some columnist cry about the love that a community can have for one of its hero sports stars.
What is it that you are looking for here? Could it be that your fan club isn't taking care of you lately? Go find a real story and get off of the negative spin on a what could have been a positive story.

With much thought I think the reason Phil is 'loved' is simple: he is the only white American Golfer in the top 6 World golf ranking! Which means he is the only hope for golf fans (mostly white) who would like to see a white golfer fill in Jack's shoes.
