don't you have better and more important things to talk about in your blogs? she is only 16 and you look like you are in 30-40 bracket, and yet she seems far more mature than you. if some company gave me a nice watch and a lot of money to endorse them , sure i will wear the watch too. she won't be the first or the last to do so. it's called celebrity endorsement. it just seems to me like you are going out of your way to make her look really bad when there is nothing that she's done to deserve it. she is just a kid who wants to play golf and if many people like her and many companies want her endorsement, then more power to her!

The trouble with blogs are if you want to lie about something or someone you can ---

I know someone very close to me that was at that press conference and he tells me that Michelle did NOT do anything that Baldwin just described.

Michelle was admiring her watch but did not brag or pimp about it to the media. A reporter asked her about it -she did not bring up anything about that watch.

Everyone knows he has no integrity or credibility around here, but who knew he would hit an all time low of actually making up stories about Michelle Wie.

He's upset that Creamer did badly that weekend and again wants to take his frustration out on a young kid.

And oh yeah Wie took over your girl's spot in the rankings too.

That's totally cool --you want to take Bode Miller and T.O. over Michelle Wie ? You got it

You're both drunk , stoned and don't care about personal integrity and responsiblity anyway.
I'm sure you and Bode can "party at the Olympic level" together-

The fact that you would align yourself with selfish self-absorbed people like Bode and T.O. says a lot about you.

Bode was in the Olympics to represent his country and decided to party rather than help the US win medals.
T.O. threw his teammates under the bus time after time, and refuses to play over money that he already agreed to previously.

I believe Michelle Wie has carried herself with class and integrity and she has always represented the US very well....

But of course someone like you wouldn't want to be associated with anything like that.

Ducking competitors in amateur. Hmm you mentioned this before.
Is that when she is supposed to have ducked the difficult competition of Morgan Pressel.

Chris you are so right.

Luckily Wie avoided Pressel, because of course Pressel is the woman for the big big occasion.

For an example, take the Fields Open. Wie and Pressel went head to head, in the final round, and the pressure was really on.

Of course all Wie could achieve was a measily 66. Pressel of course shot a much more impressive 71.
Luckily Michelle avoided her before then. Phew Michelle.

Well, it's funny how BOTH sides of this are commenting on the watch comment (widely reported, so I'll believe she said something), and none of you were there.

If you remember, Tiger came out with the Nike-scripted "Hello World" crap, so I won't begrudge Wie's check-cashing ability. It's apparently OK for golfers to shameless plug (after all, they pay their own way). And she is only 16, so she shouldn't be expected to put on a press conference without the occasional tactical hiccup.

But One-putt's obsession with his genitals shouldn't be allowed to continue unabated. Don't they have some moderators that can keep this kind of infantilism off the site?

Some of the golf analysts who post in Travel Golf, both hosts and follow up commentators, seem to believe she is more talented than Tiger Woods was at an equivalent age.

Some analysts who post in the various blogs here, both hosts and follow up commentators, also say Michelle Wie is the most talented female golfer today.

Some, such as James Coulthard, have predicted Michelle Wie will win two of the four LPGA majors in 2006.

So it appears a number of people who are regulars here believe Michelle is an incredibly talented golfer.

Yet there are at least four other golfers, Annika Sorenstam, Paula Creamer, Karrie Webb and Dottie Pepper, who took fewer -- and in the cases of Paula and Karrie, CONSIDERABLY FEWER -- LPGA starts than is the case to date with Michelle Wie to win their first LPGA tournament.

It appears there is a gap between what Michelle Wie's talent is touted to be compared with the number of LPGA wins -- or PGA cuts -- she has achieved.

Michelle Wie is reported to be incredibly talented. Yet Michelle Wie has yet to win an LPGA tournament, despite being better than 99-plus percent of the LPGA golfers, if not all of them, according to a number of analysts who post here.

It seems to be a conundrum.

Quite a few people are saying Chris Baldwin is lying.

But is he? It looks like he's telling the truth.

He's rendered his opinion. One can agree or disagree with his take on Michelle's behavior. But it appears Baldwin has his facts straight.

At least three separate press accounts, including from the AP, show Baldwin accurately quoted Michelle Wie.

Maybe the Wie Warriors are the ones who need to get their facts straight before they pitch their latest fit.

The Wie watch

Forget her first professional check (for $73,227, no less) what really had
Michelle Wie smiling last week was the diamond-encrusted watch she received
from Omega, with which the teenager had just signed an endorsement deal.
"It's sparkly, " the 16-year-old told reporters. "I kept checking the time like every five minutes."

Associated Press 2-28-06
Golf prodigy Michelle Wie heads back to high school on Monday with $99,274
from her first LPGA Tour pay cheque and a diamond-encrusted watch from her
latest endorsement deal. The 16-year-old junior at Punahou School, Hawaii, was
stuck on the Omega watch she was given before the final round of the Fields
Open, where she dazzled with seven birdies in her round of 66 that left her one shot out of a playoff. ''It's sparkly, '' the schoolgirl giggled. ''I kept checking the time like every five minutes.''

Biloxi Sun Herald 2-27-06
Michelle Wie heads back to high school Monday with $73,227 from her first
LPGA Tour paycheck and a diamond-encrusted watch from her latest endorsement deal.

The 16-year-old junior at Punahou School was particularly enamored with the Omega watch she was given before the final round Saturday at the Fields Open,
where she dazzled a hometown gallery with seven birdies in her round of 66 that left her one shot out of a playoff.
"It's sparkly, " Wie said. "I kept checking the time like every five
minutes."
Trouble was, she ran out of time.
"I really wish it was a 72-hole event," Wie said.

Those girls were older when doing it. Yes that is important. Michelle's attempts at 12 years old can hardly be compared against someone who started their lpga career much later. Also those other girls won when competing week after week. Paula Creamer's lpga record was pretty poor, until she started to compete on a routine basis.

While Christie Kerr has 5 wins in the last 2 years, she also missed 3 cuts in her last 7 tournaments of 2005. Michelle hasn't missed an lpga cut in 2 and a half years, and hasn't even been close to missing one.
Do you think she will miss one soon? How about Christie Kerr? Given 3 missed in 7, it's not unlikely, is it.

Norman, it appears that a bit of a gap has appeared between what people tout, using arcane stats and so forth, as Michelle's ability, potential, etc. -- and the fact that Michelle has actually not won an LPGA tournament.

One would have expected Michelle to have won a tournament based on the many claims that appear on these blogs about how superlative a golfer she is.

A poster asked a question and I answered it. I realize you and the other Wie Warriors need to fall back on everything except the fact that Michelle has yet to win a tournament to justify your position.

Since the greatest attention in a given tournament each week goes to the person who actually won the tournament, a logical inference would be that winning is the most important measure of success.

If Michelle wins a tournament, then the skepticism about her ability to win would naturally begin to wane.

Until then, that reality -- Michelle Wie has yet to win a tournament -- is something you can't dodge no matter how far you drill down into statistics.

I'm sure you'll try, but the cold facts are inescapable. You can set your watch by it.

George,

Winning is indeed the most important position in any given tournament.
However it is not the only important position.

You talk about facts, but the inescapable fact is that Michelle Wie has 2 years to break the youngest lpga winner record, so I'm not particularly concerned about it.

As regards winning, she has a number of things against her having won by this stage:
- her age, nobody has done it before 18 years of age.
- her lack of a run of events. It is very difficult to find a rhythm when dipping in and out of tours.
- her variety of events. There is little doubt that it would be easier for her to win on the lpga if she forgot about mens touranments, but the reality is, that if she did that she could forget about a career in mens professional golf. Therefore, although it may delay her first lpga win, it is the correct option for her to take to pursue both the womens and mens games, because ultimately it should lead to more success.
- she only plays 8 events, per year. Most of the lpga winners last year were 1 time winners. They were winning 1 time from about 25 events. Surely you would agree that if Wie were to play a 25 event season, she would be absolutely odds on to win multiple events.

George, Mac, Baldy and all you other in denial whackos....

Michelle Wie, tee to green,is clearly the most TALENTED female golfer out there right now. Her shot making ability is head and shoulders above all the other women. She plays shots that no other female golfer can fathom. That is GOLF TALENT. The ONLY way anyone can realize this is by going out and actually comparing the shotmaking of Michelle and other female golfers. This is something I doubt any of the Wie Whackers/Couch Potatos have or will do. Therefore, in my opinion, you WWs/CPs don't know what you are talking about.

Is she the BEST female golfer. No. May never be unless she learns to WIN. But I guess you blind guys can't recognize or appreciate GOLF TALENT.

George, The "fact" you always cite, MW has not won an LPGA tournament, in fact backs up the proposition that MW is an incredibly talented golfer. While not yet a winner, The number of high finishes in major professional tournaments is nothing less than astounding. NO ONE has EVER done so well at so young an age. NO ONE. Not Annika, Dottie, Karrie or Paula even came close to what Michelle has ALREADY accomplished. Why do you think she's already ranked #2 in the world? Because of performance! It was not GIVEN to her. She EARNED it by playing golf extremely well. Or is this a conspiracy between the LPGA and the press?

That's New Jersey...not NYC....NYC is the big time not NJ.... I lived in NYC/Village and visited NJ many times via car, bus, amtrak and NJ transit... NJ is, from whatever view you look at it....well its NJ....don't want to insult NJ as I love the place, but calling Asbury Park Press as being part of "ultra competitive NY Metropolitan area" is misleading. Asbury Park Press may be a big deal to the people in Freehold -middle class, Deal - rich, and Monmouth County in general...but the only important coverage would be of Mounmouth park horse charts...and the real NJ devil that lives in the pine barrens... Big whoops covering 4 world series etc, sounds like a cub reporter to me. But he must be a gifted golf writer as he has gotten under the skin of Tiger's caddy...wow! And those 6 NATIONAL AP sports editor awards. Trying to imply that he is a nationally recognized writer. So why doesn't he have a syndicated column or write for a major news organization? Oh APP is major in the NY Metro! Good grief you guys are self agrandizing.

Ok Mr. Nesmith. Time to fish or cut bait.
List Baldies accomplishments and awards, everything that you say he has done. Put meat on this bone you have thrown.Give us some facts that can be substantiated, not wind passing.

There are no awards listed that any of our search engines can find, no articles that aren't either in http://www.golfpublisher.com/ or in this blog.
How do you account for that?
This super talented man has been writing anonymously? Ghost writing perhaps?
Being cute with words in a medium such as a golf blog like this certainly makes him look like a hack from National Enquirer or one of that ilk.

So list for us these marvelous accomplishments for all of us to gaze upon and marvel at.
or accept the fact that he is nothing more than a would be sports hack.

Why stop with these "accomplished" journalists? Why not include John Feinstein,
Rick Telander and Dan Jenkins? What about Plimpton, Red Smith and Shirley Povich? Hell, I say we ought to hold Chris Baldwin up to Damon Runyon and Ring Lardner. You're absolutely right with this! In fact, why limit it!? Let's add Ernest Hemingway.

** George, Mac, Baldy and all you other in denial whackos....

Michelle Wie, tee to green,is clearly the most TALENTED female golfer out there right now. **

So when you say tee to green, are you including the part between the fringe of the green and the little hole with the flagstick in it?

Because the problem seems to be the the hole appears to Michelle to be the size of a dime, in contrast to good putters who probably see it as the size of a dinner plate.

** Her shot making ability is head and shoulders above all the other women. She plays shots that no other female golfer can fathom. That is GOLF TALENT. **

Michelle Wie has golf talent.

[...]

** Therefore, in my opinion, you WWs/CPs don't know what you are talking about.**

Since you're using abbreviations, didn't you mean to write something like:

TF, IMO, U WWs/CPs DK W U R talking about.

** Is she the BEST female golfer. No. May never be unless she learns to WIN. **

I actually don't really disagree with what you've written. In fact, that is the position of myself and at least some of the Wie Skeptics.

Wie has a lot of talent. She has yet to win. She might not have yet learned to win. Her performance in the recently completed tournament in the clutch reinforces that.

** But I guess you blind guys can't recognize or appreciate GOLF TALENT. **

Please see above.

** George, The "fact" you always cite, MW has not won an LPGA tournament,**

Why the scare quotes around the word fact? It IS a fact.

** in fact backs up the proposition that MW is an incredibly talented golfer. While not yet a winner, The number of high finishes in major professional tournaments is nothing less than astounding. NO ONE has EVER done so well at so young an age. NO ONE. Not Annika, Dottie, Karrie or Paula even came close to what Michelle has ALREADY accomplished. **

And yet, as the Wie Warriors have pointed out, Annika, Dottie, Karrie and Paula all have taken fewer starts, and in the case of Karrie and Paula -- CONSIDERABLY FEWER -- to get that first LPGA win.

** Why do you think she's already ranked #2 in the world? **

People at Rolex flunked Algebra 1? Maybe Michelle should tutor them.

** Because of performance! It was not GIVEN to her. She EARNED it by playing golf extremely well. Or is this a conspiracy between the LPGA and the press? **

I leave the conspiracy theories and black helicopter sightings to you Wie Lunatics. If you don't believe me, find the threads related to the Wie disqualification in 2005.

You'll find folks like Cheryl, Kyle, June, Norman, One-Putt, J. Coulthard, and others are candidates for case studies in padded cells, and not anyone who should be allowed near sharp objects or heavy machinery.

To Chris Baldwin,

You are obviously leading a life of a comparative failure, which leads one to antagonise other's success. For a man of your age (I can see that you're balding at the top), to take on a girl of 16 and her parents, by picturing them as nothing more than a money hungry bunch, is just so low. Your article allows us to know so much about you as a person because more often than not, what a person says about others speaks volume about that person, rather than the others he meant to defame. Any competent, professional journalist -- unlike amateurs -- knows that getting sued is a fact of life in the profession. The majority of the time, the lawsuits are frivolous and without merit. In fact, it usually means said journalist is a hard-charging, aggressive pro, uncovering wrong-doing and corruption, which is a big part of their jobs. This is the problem with amateurs: they blindly jump at the first thing they mistakenly believe backs up their spurious arguments, ignoring the larger story. Ignorance is rampant, and apparently easily-spread.

The old saying of shit sticks, no matter how untrue the story, applies here as well.Eventually your stories are going to hurt Michelle Wie, and when they do, I hope that she can take your collective asses to the proverbial cleaners.

A journalist with nothing in mind other than a reasonable question, asked Ms.Wie about her watch. Ms.Wie answered, taking all of 30 seconds to do so, but Baldie puts an entirely different spin on the story with that one short question/answer.
That is the kind of jackass irresponsible journalistic BS that gets people p-o'd
Defending totally stupid stories is something you shouldn't put up with. One of the first things you learn in journalism is the Associated Press stylebook. It is the bible for the correct use of the English language in most U.S. newspapers.

"Hell" and "damn," while not encouraged, are acceptable. Other, more earthy slang or curse words, are not. We here at TG follow AP guidelines.

p4p:
Normally I might tell you that you've hit a new low in a display of ignorance, but I'm sure you'll soon be surpassed by another Wie Warrior before you see my post.

So I'll just point out the fallacy in your basic premise

1. Baldwin correctly quoted Wie WRT
a. her quotes, including "I kept checking the time"
b. she noted that she was wearning the watch, and was dazzled by it, including "it's sparkly."

2. Baldwin correctly cited the salient facts. Including, but not limited to, that the watch company gave her the time piece prior to the final round.

I posted multiple stories from different sources about Wie's comments, how she received her watch, the context, and her quotes. They show Baldwin accurately quoted Wie and the circumstances.

No one has refuted what I posted, because they can't.

Now, p4p, you surely can't be so ignorant, so completely numb-skulled, that you fail to realize that Baldwin's role goes beyond being a mere reporter of the facts.

Baldwin is providing an OPINION, based on HIS interpretation of the FACTS. I would be shocked if you are so dense that you do not realize this.

(people like June, Cheryl, Kyle, Norman, Jim Coulthard, and perhaps a few others that one could name ... maybe not quite as shocking)

For example. It is a FACT that President Clinton did, in fact, "have sex with that woman, Miss Lewinsky." That is a FACT. That is a journalistic FACT.

However, there are various OPINIONS that some could draw from the ex-president's actions. Some are reasonable. Some not reasonable. Depending on one's point of view.

I won't list the various opinions that surfaced over the years and at that time, because I'm sure that people are generally aware of the OPINIONS lodged on the right, left, and middle of the political spectrum WRT ex-POTUS Clinton.

Same thing regarding the Wie Watch Certain things did happen regarding the Wie Watch. There is no doubt they happened. People called Baldwin a liar. He is absolutely NOT A LIAR about THE FACTS.

You can disagree with his INTERPRETATION of the FACTS. But -- and this is a Journalism 101 requirement of an OPINION writer -- Baldwin based his opinion ON THE FACTS. Some may find that opinion outrageous or perceptive. And that is to be expected.

Bottom line. I know more enough about journalism, whether 101 or 999, to state this: Baldwin as a presenter of OPINIONS, did not violate any important -- and probably not any at all -- Journalism 101 axioms.

The primary thing Baldwin violated is the delicate and easily unbalanced sensitivities of the Wie Warriors.

The only thing that is unpardonable is that you and your Wie Warrior cohorts become so easily unhinged about a bit of skepticism.

(And I see that as soon as you said you had left the field, Elvis, there was a sighting of you just 11 minutes later. Not sure how willing your spirit is, but in your case, there's no doubt that your flesh AND mind are weak.)

Oh my George, this is too good to pass up. When I can get you to run off at the mouth like a soup sandwich, It is obviously too soon to leave.

I love tweaking the village idiot, George and you fill the role so well.

I'm sure that if you speak nicely to Baldie, he'll throw you a bone.

Now, lets hear what else you can say ( and I am certain it will be another page at least, why heck, you are even more verbose than Timmy or Nessy or even your master,Mr Baldwhine himself.

I see they are asking for volunteer contributors in one of the mothership (or is that the flagship) publications(http://www.worldgolf.com/). The banner says no experience necessary so you'll have the proper credentials. There is mention of the need to at least recognize a game of golf if you should stumble across it, bt then your seeing eye dog should be trained to find a golf course so that you both may relieve yourselves. Don't forget to take your pooper scooper with you for your droppings though.

Ok, thats all for now George. This should earn at least a page of nonstop vitriol.
I'll check back later to see if you need your bib and diapers changed.

The Kraft Nabisco is coming in a few weeks and another chance to marvel at miss Wie. It is such a shame she can't play every week. Having to wait 3 or 4 weeks between appearances is extremely hard to cope with.
I hope she announces another sponsorship deal with a perfume company or a hat maker just to p**s Morgan off. Maybe we will see a few more crocodile tears from Morgan. After all she is supposed to be tough.
I will be there rooting for Michelle wearing my badge.
Look out for a guy wearing a white short sleeve shirt with a Michelle badge on the pocket, that will be me.
Maybe I will bump into Baldie.

it's hilarious to see grown adults bashing someone for bashing someone else. Two wrongs don't make a right, instead it just shows serious character flaws in people that defend others that they don't even really know except what they see on tv & read in the paper.

It is also sad that people are rewarded before they have proven themselves. Wie hasn't won anything professionally but she's been called the next tiger woods. blah! Maybe she's the next female something but women do not garner the attention that male atheletes receive because women dont play at the same level or excitement that male atheletes perform. The media has pumped her up with the help of top companies that endorse her. Just because she has big bank account that she hasn't really earned. Hype Hype Hype lol...

PRESSEL WAS IMPRESSIVE with her poise and ability to articulate how she was feeling about being drubbed by Wie on her competitor's home turf. She has been critical of Wie's free passes to major events the past couple of years and even took a small shot at her Saturday when she made the remark, "It looked like she could close it out."

Translation? If she makes that birdie putt, she has a chance to win, but she didn't.

How many events has Wie played in as a pro?
You have only stated one fact and it is wrong.
Get a life.

I don't understand why there is even a reference to journalism, let alone this journalism 101 stuff. If you want to talk journalism, read Walter Lippmann and Michael Schudson. I encourage you to really look at what scholars and real journalists have to say about the role of journalism and really think about the proper relationship between the press, public opinion and self-governance before you start sprouting about journalism 101. Anyone who actually took an introductory journalism class would know the difference between journalism and the truth: "news and truth are not the same thing." (Lippmann)

So I don't think I even need to actually think about the differences between this "stuff" and journalism or the truth--suffice to say journalism or truth have very little in common with this stuff. But this is not an excuse for Baldwin to malign people for no reason just because he is a blogger, after all most people have such a thing as a conscience and some people even have a social conscience. But I think that would be too much to expect from this sports "writer" with a passion for National-Enquirer-like reporting.
