Difference between Phil Mickelson & Michelle Wie: He buys fan's watch, she crassly pimps hers
Add commentsPhil Mickelson delivered one of the great little side moments in sports Saturday. No, not his slide from tied for the lead with Tiger Woods to four shots back.
Phil losing it while being paired with Tiger is as old news as Lindsay Lohan’s dad having a little trouble behind the wheel.
Mickelson’s moment came when he launched a shot into the gallery on Doral’s 10th hole and got a lucky bounce off a fan’s wristwatch. When the ball rocketed off the watch, it smashed it. This caused Mickelson to promptly go over to the stunned fan and hand over two Ben Franklins.
Now, no matter what you think of Mickelson, that’s cool.
Can you imagine if Tiger hit a shot off a fan’s cheap timepiece? He’d probably send his caddy enforcer Steve Williams into the masses to scream at the man for daring to lift up his arm.
Why didn’t you take it off the noggin, man! We might have gotten a better lie. Don’t you know anything about golf etiquette, you idiot!
As for golf’s most overblown phenom? Well, we already know what Michelle Wie would do, don’t we? She’d no doubt launch into a post round press conference soliloquy on how it’s a shame that fan didn’t have a more “sparkly” watch like this great diamond-encrusted Omega that just happens to be on her wrist.
The one she talks about so spontaneous like and everything.
Yes Wie Warriors, while you were trying to douse the most crass display of commercialism in recent sports history by your girl, a shot went into the gallery and kept watches in the golf news. Now, that’s beyond hilarious.
No one could anticipate that.

You rightly recognise that Wie is one of the greatest talents around, and try to latch on to that to boost your own goals.

It is fortuitous for us that Chris Baldwin is so gifted with second sight. He and only he knows what Michelle Wie would do...not even Michelle herself knows.
Fortunately, Michelle plans to announce Monday that she has hired Chris as her personal Jafar, a soothsayer if you will. An added stroke of luck is that Gilber Gottfried will accompany Baldwin as Iago the parrot. Phil might have received the lucky bounce on Saturday, but Michelle gets the greatest of all with the signing of Chris on Monday.
I have two teenage girls who talk and talk and talk about other girls.
about what they wear, what they do, how they do, who they do it with, so on and so on.
from my experience only two types of people talk this way: girls or gay guys. I wonder what catagory you fit in.

Great job Chris l read your blog every day and love your comments one of the few that has anything sensible and honest l stop reading the pimps of the "golf mags" and love your comments of Phil and MW. If these Wie Worshippers think for on minute she was the dedcision maker on any donation they are more cultish than l thought. She probably didn't even know about the Katrina gift and it was a publicty stunt but did help but so did the Arab Emirates gift.

Michelle Wie donated $500,000 for god's sake! Give her a break on the watch! It might annoy you that an Asian girl her age is attracting so much attention, but it is what it is. Golf is no longer a bastion of the lily white! Deal with it!

You do talk just like a jealous gay guy yapping his 'flaming' mouth about this and that. especially about a teenage girl who is prettier, a better athelete and definately richer than you. I played baseball and golf in high school and think myself somewhat of a jock. but i don't see why you have such a 'thing' for Ms. Wie. unless your racist, gay or both.

My issue is with ridiculous expectations. I think those who see a sound byte, or read an article or two about Michelle, and declare here the best player who ever lived are sadly misguided. Not everyone who appreciates what Michelle has accomplished is that foolish.
The point you missed completely, or choose to ignore, is that expecting a 16 year old to win in LPGA is a ridicules expectation. Condemning a player, for not having done so, is simply foolish. This is something no player, not even the greatest legends in Women’s golf, have ever achieved. The fact that there is a player who could conceivable accomplish this should delight and entertain… not be a target of ridicule because the miracle has not yet taken place.
Alex, Michelle’s age relative to other players in not the issue. It is her absolute age today that is the issue. Should Michelle reach 25 years of age with out winning, the age at which Annika won her first (after losing 34 in a row), it will be reasonable to start questioning her ability. It is entirely possible Michelle will never devolve into the player her potential promises. I can think of several scenarios from injury to romance to burnout to new interest that could lead Michelle to remain an interesting footnote in the history of golf. What is fascinating is that the potential is there and we get to see it unfold, for better or worse.
Finally, Alex please read carefully, I only commented on what your statements in this forum “seem to indicate”. I do not have a problem separating a persons opinion from the person them self. I have no intention of casting dispersion on your person, only to state my opinion, that the ideas you express here are foolish and immature. I will happily take your word for it that you are mature, well educated and intelligent and look forward to see evidence of the same in your postings.
With your constant ranting about what a loser MW is...why don't you challenge her to a $500 nassau and see how you do. After that experience, you need to be "sissy slapped."
