New Jersey closes its Atlantic City casinos, golf goes on

Wednesday July 5, 2006 | 13:53:08 173 words, 2376 views
Win a free golf book!

No one really expected New Jersey’s budget crisis to shut down the Atlantic City casinos. When push came to slot machine whirl, the safe bet was the politicians would cave and keep the money bandits operating.

But lo and behold, there was no last minute reprieve to keep the only place in the Garden State that Michael Jordan ever willingly visits open. At 8 a.m. this morning, janitors started locking the doors to Atlantic City’s casinos.

Which surely means that it’s nearby golf courses will probably be filled with even more guys looking for action and side bets than usual. Some who may have never swung a club before. At least a golf club.

Meanwhile, there are surely some folks in New Jersey who suddenly think that having a gay governor who may or may not have been corrupt wasn’t so bad after all. Considering Jon Corzine’s performance here.

Of course, Michelle Wie fans are certain that New Jersey’s been shut down so everyone can watch her in the Match Play Championship.

Don't blame ya.

Bloggers' competition is fierce !

Hey Chris, better watch out! Blogger extraordinaire, Alex, has admonished me on your other column about inserting Michelle's name (Bubbles as he calls her) into anything we write that he deems as a non-sequitor.

You wouldn't want your buddy, Alex, to get upset at you. The ranks of the Baldie Berserkers are too thin as it is.

Just think how boring Jersey would be if Michelle were not there this week. Attendance by Mexicans (who work at the Atlantic City Casinos) will be thru the roof to watch Lorena play.

She is my pick to win this week. Her golf mojo is just too strong now.

My pick is Annika for the HSBC. She is one of the longer drivers and after her putting performance at the Open, she'll dominate.

I believe Annika & Lorena are in the same bracket and should meet (if they get that far) in the semi-finals.

Both are long ball drivers but Lorena's putting has been off in the last few tournaments.

Looking for a Annika/Michelle final where experience & putting will trump Wie's longer drives.

A blog about New Jersey casinos and every comment is about Michelle Wie.

"Never underestimate the stupidity of the general public" - Benjamin Franklin. Guess that applies to golfers too. Nothing else in golf matters besides her apparently. I'm disgusted.

Wie fan, You must remember that this is Chris Baldwin's blog. And if he didn't insert the name of Bubbles into his blog, some Wie-nut like you would somehow mention her in the first few replies. This blog was originally about the closing of the AC casinos as a result of an impasse being reached in the NJ bureaucracy as concerns a budget. Let's talk about it. The controversy has only one cause: The absolute arrogance and recalcitrance of the NJ state government spawned and entrenched by decades of corruption and nourished by years of excessive and oppressive taxation. No state in the union, with the possible exception of Louisiana, is infested with as much nepotism, cronyism, and downright corruption as NJ. Some of the laws in NJ are archaic. By law, NJ still does not have self serve gasoline pumps. (Oregon is the only other state beset with this absurdity that I know of). The good people of NJ deserve better and perhaps a recall should be in order. The trouble is, maybe the "boys" wouldn't allow a recall.

Wie fan , I guess you have the proper handle. This blog was initiated by your enemy, Chris Baldwin, and primarily concerned the closing of the AC casinos by the incumbent governor. That, dummy, IS politics! If you don't like it, YOU take your cornball comments elsewhere!
