Brandi Chastain slaps Wie Warriors, recognizes who needs to replace LPGA boss Caroyln Bivens: Me

Brandi Chastain - one of the most famous female athletes in the world (hey, you try and rip your shirt off with that much skill after scoring a World Cup clinching goal) - obviously knows a thing or two about what makes women’s sports work.

While TravelGolf.com National Golf Editor Tim McDonald effectively details why the LPGA needs a new commissioner in a column which has received only slightly less promotion than Spiderman 2, he misses the obvious solution on Bivens’ replacement.

One that Brandi Chastain would whole heartedly endorse. One that would send the Wie Warriors, already reeling from having to now completely reverse course and peck, “Well, who can expect this poor 16-year-old to finish in the top five, let alone win - we’re not still talking winning are we” - in the wake of the Women’s British Open, into an apocalyptic fit. One that pretends to enjoy McDonald’s swampland home stories over a Denny’s French Slam.

It’s as transparent as the plot of M. Night Shyamalan’s new movie. I should be the new LPGA leader.

Just listen to what Chastain said, what she recognized with her women’s athlete intitution in our first interview together. I asked Chastain why there aren’t more women in celebrity golf tournaments.

She quickly shot back unprompted, “Cause you’re not in charge. Because you’re not inviting them.

“I don’t know. I have no idea what the answer to that question is. I don’t run a golf tournament. But I’d like to see one run by you. You’re a big backer of women’s sports.”

There was no sarcasm in this either. Chastain smiled as bright and tender as could be. It was a special moment shared at the front door of a women’s restroom. This was confirmed when the motherly gray-haired tournament volunteer guarding the women’s bathroom for the celebrities turned to me after Chastain slipped through the door and said, “You did good.”

Of course, Chastain did defend Zidane, the mad head butting Frenchman, in the same interview. No matter, I’ll take it.
