Arizona Cardinals' truly horrific play helps vacationing golfers
Tuesday October 31, 2006 | 05:20:54 257 words, 2620 views
For years, golf vacationers to the Phoenix-Scottsdale area have benefitted from the Arizona Cardinals hapless, hopeless ways. No matter where you’re from - and no one’s really from Arizona - you could get to see an NFL team you liked while swinging away on some great courses. They didn’t use to give away tickets to Cardinals games - unless you had a pulse. Oh sure, the good seats for the Cowboys game could be a tough ticket. Because there were actually Cowboy fans in the valley - as opposed to Cardinal fans. This year that all was supposed to change. The Cardinals moved into a new state-of-the-art stadium out in Glendale in the West Valley. They signed the most overrated running back in the NFL (Edgerrin James), drafted Hollywood’s favorite party boy quarterback (Matt Leinart) and said the heck with those needless offensive linemen. Optimism naturally ran high in an area that knows nothing about football. Going to a Cardinal game became an event. Guys wore jerseys around with their price tags still on, pretending they’d been a fan for life. Now, seven straight losses later … Well, it’s good to be a vacationing golfer football fan again. Prices are down, down, down. It’s not like the good old bad days again - yet. Give that another season. But if you really want to just see a game at the new stadium - and it’s worth checking out - target that Nov. 19 Detroit Lions game the weekend before Thanksgiving. This will be one of those games where the scalpers chase you across the parking lot.
Comments:
I am truly surprised at the negativity that seems to come out of every article written about the Cardinals. It is no wonder most fans are irritated, all they need to do is to read one of your columns. Give the team a break, look at NFL history and you will find that winning teams take years to build.

Monica,
Years to build? It's been 18 years in the valley of the sun and we've had 1 winning season. I'd say they had plenty of years. As for ARizona golf, there are some new courses this year and some new owners.....which are running the otherwise good courses into the ground. AZGolfinsider Leave a comment: |
