BCS Championship Game brings attention to West Valley golf in greater Phoenix-Scottsdale

The national media is suddenly discovering Phoenix’s West Valley since college football’s national championship tilt is being held out in Glendale.

Sportswriters who wouldn’t leave Scottsdale’s plush resorts if they didn’t have to - and who can blame them, even Florida and Ohio State are staying there - have to trek out to the West Valley to the Cardinals’ gleaming new stadium. They might end up being surprised by what else is there.

TravelGolf.com readers already know that the West Valley long ago stopped being a wasteland not worth the drive. We wrote about the West Valley being the area’s new golf hot spot more than 14 months ago.

This is where there’s still room to build stuff in this sprawling golf mecca. And some of what’s already been built is some of the most inventive golf you’ll find anywhere.

Raven at Verrado is already one of the best courses in the entire Phoenix-Scottsdale region. Don’t be surprised if it makes a run into TravelGolf’s 2007 Arizona Top 10.

And the Wigwam Resort’s renovation of its two Robert Trent Jones Sr. courses has made all the difference.

Even if its $800 per night rate during BCS week is a little crazy. Unless they’re just gouging those annoying Luckeye fans. Than it’d be all right.

More on that later.
