Ultra arrogant Urban Meyer still no Steve Spurrier as a coach, but better as a golfer
Tuesday January 9, 2007 | 11:08:15 307 words, 4039 views
I know Steve Spurrier. And Urban Meyer is no Steve Spurrier. Not when it comes to coaching skill. Not even after guiding the Florida Gators to a 41-14 trouncing of the Ohio State Luckeyes from the Big Overrated Conference. Sure everyone in Scottsdale should be grateful that Meyer sent the OSU fans in overalls and straw hats whimpering to the airport. But that doesn’t mean he’s even in Spurrier’s same league as a coach. Spurrier is a true innovator. Meyer had to strain his brain and waste games as he figured out how to use Chris Leak, a quarterback who’d only win him a national championship. Meyer is actually more arrogant than Spurrier though. You have to give him that. Sure, the reputations would scream otherwise. But they’re wrong. Anyone who watched Meyer raise his arm in nonchalant full cockiness after escaping an upset loss to Spurrier’s undermanned Gamecocks by the extended fingers of a last-second field goal block saw that. Or just listen to an Urban Meyer press conference. Any Urban Meyer press conference. Spurrier brings some charm with his bravado. Meyer’s just a snob. The one thing Meyer may trump Spurrier in is golf. At least if you listen to Colorado State coach Sonny Lubick. Lubick tells Sports Illustrated a story in which after years of getting trounced by Meyer, his then assistant, in golf, he led by four strokes with one hole to play. “It was going to be the first time I ever beat,” Lubick said in SI. “…I started thinking about how much fun it was going to be razzing him. But he got into my head. I can’t believe it, but he beat me. He found a way to beat me.” I’ve seen Steve Spurrier golf. He couldn’t even beat me if he was down four strokes with a hole to play.

I just won the national championship! You calling me arrogant is like the pot calling the kettle black.

When you win games and national championships you can afford to be a little arrogant. When you write like a hack on a unimportant golf blog on an unimportant golf site, you can't be arrogant at all.
I'm not arrogant. I'm just better than Steve Spurrier and I know it. Please stop comparing me to him. I thought this win would get me out from under his long shadow but if guys like you keep writing stuff like this I will never be able to claim my superiority. It's really hard living in Gainesville and being the Gator football coach. Sure Steve beat me last year and should have beat me this year and will probably beat me next year but I won a NC in 2 years and it took him a lot longer. Therefore I AM BETTER! Can't you see that? Please?
"unimportant blog" or "unimportant golf site". It must be pretty important if it gets you worked up.
At the end of the day, football is for
the mentally ill.
Meyer's not arrogant - he believes in his principles and his players. Raising your hands in joy as the Spurrier monkey jumps off your back isn't arrogant. Taking joy in seeing kids who bought into your pitch about character and commitment fulfill their biggest dream isn't arrogant. He gave loads of props to OSU and Coach Tressel and teaches his players to do the same. You're just way off base.
And no, you couldn't beat Spurrier in golf. Not on your best day. What are you, the only Baldwin brother who can't get an acting job (despite not being able to act)?

*tsk tsk* Stick to golf would ya?
Your judgmental blog is mighty laughable and full of insecurity at best... Obviously you know nothing of Coach Meyer, or you wouldn't dare make such petty and uneducated comments about a damn good coach. Hello? Coach Meyer just won a championship for the underdog Gators after winning one with the (also underdog) Runnin' Utes. He's a great coach. You are saying negative things about him, and all it does is make YOU look bad. Insecure about something? Why post an entire blog about someone just to bash them? I associate your inexperienced writing with junk journalism since you couldn't write a neutral piece. Anyone that is proud of a huge accomplishment, watch out! 'Cause Mr. Golf Blog Guy is gonna bash you for feeling happy about your huge accomplishment. *eyeroll* Get a clue, and like I said- stick to golf. Mmkay? Urban Meyer won a national championship only six years after he got his first head coaching job-- How long have you been a "journalist"?? From the looks of you its been a heck of a lot longer than six years, and you're still writing fourth rate articles on a fourth rate golf site.
Hey Chris;
these fooball junkies are alot tougher than the Warriors for Michelle. You either like getting whipped or your dumber than I thought you were. Even McDonald stays away from these issues

I'm trying to figure out if you were
attempting to write a serious article here, or if it was some type of joke. I'm hoping that it was written in jest because,if not, it was a worse performance that the Buckeyes' in last night's national championship game against Meyer's team.
The Meyer family and the Spurrier family are friends. Meyer embraces Spurrier's legacy. Meyer and the Gator's have honored Spurrier at the Swamp on two occasions this year. Meyer discussed the "long shadow of Steve Spurrier" last night after winning the National Championship:
“People ask, `Will the shadow disappear?' It shouldn't and I want to make sure it doesn't,'' Meyer said. 'To be honest, he is the reason we're here. We admire people who achieve, If Florida didn't win championships under Spurrier, I am not coming to Florida. You don't go to start traditions at this stage of your career. You go try to build on a tradition that is there. The real tradition started in the 90’s when they won a National Championship and six SEC championships."

umm you may where a straw hat when you are writing your ridiculous blogs or trying to swing a golf club but i dont really think ohioan urban meyer, his wife who carries a buckeye in her purse, or any of the ohio natives attending the game wear straw hats and overalls .
secondly, if "L"uckeyes was not a typo you are just a ridiculous person who was probably falling asleep to golf announcers or blogging about bs rather than watching any football thirdly, you are the arrogant one, do you get paid to write ?!? and finally, your support of tiger woods' quote about being a soccer dad was the stupidist thing i have read in my entire life. it is not even logical. maybe tiger would not be proud to be a soccer dad, but rather would be proud to be a blogger dad because the world wibe web is a far more physical sport than soccer, or so i would assume by your comments
Why, exactly, is a golf blogger/columnist critiquing the personality and behavior of two coaches in a completely unrelated sport? Only the author of this triviality can answer for his own inner demons and bias, but surely the proprietors of this website about the sport of golf might want to ask why this column seems calculated to raise the hackles of Gator fans everywhere, a disproportionate number of whom are golfers. I found this site and column accidentally through a Google news search. As a Gator alumnus and golfer, I can say that I will not visit this site again.
Enjoy your rant.
Why not apply some brain power to your argument there wind bag. Don't mistake a winning attitude or a man excited that his team is doing well with arrogance. Arrogance is exactly displayed in your article so re-read it a few times. Words = arrogance.
You obviously are looking for reactions. I'm a long time USC fan and no not that west coast USC, damn it, lol. Some one needs to point out how badly Ohio was supposed to destroy the Gators. When they didn't and all you can refer to is Urban Myer’s arrogance, pretty weak and missing the bigger story which is the difference between the two programs. What I’m talking about is preparation down to what they are eating or not eating. Write about how Heisman trophies should be impeachable. Then we will pay attention, other wise tell me about the next wonder tool that will destroy my golf game. You know the one between your ears. Leave a comment: |
