All these suddenly self righteous baseball writers keeping Mark McGwire out of the Baseball Hall of Fame are a joke. And a misguided one at that.
These are the same guys who didn’t think anything was amok when Barry Bonds’ skull kept growing and growing. These are the same guys who still celebrated McGwire long, hard and fawningly after andro was found in his locker.
Now that the anti-steroids crusade became mainstream, they’re suddenly the great defenders of the game?
Please. Your average used car salesman is more committed to his ideals.
McGwire deserves to be in the Hall based on his performance. A performance that came in a time when a huge number of players were on steroids - and newsflash, still are today. If you don’t think a large percentage of the pitchers throwing to McGwire were juicing, you’re probably expecting the tooth fairy.
McGwire performed at a Hall of Fame level under the standards of his era.
Sure, he looked like a complete dolt in front of congress, but this isn’t a good guy award. This isn’t Pete Rose betting on baseball and threatening the integrity of the sport.
When steroids are in every locker room you have a near level professional playing field.
But McGwire is kept from the Hall and left to play golf. That’s how the shrunken retirement Big Mac spends a large chunk of his time. I once missed him by a day at the excellent San Diego area Barona Creek Golf Club.
He’s still a celebrity to the golf pros in Socal. Maybe he finds solace for being scapegoated for something that was much larger than him in all these high-end tracks.

By your reckoning, I take it you are in
favor of Gil Hodges being in the HOF?
Please don't say "who's Gil Hodges?"
'Deserve ain't got nothing to do with it'
As long as the baseball writers choose to exclude him, that would be the case whether he 'deserves' it or not....
They're all cheaters and I hate cheaters.
Then again, McGuire and Bonds haven't actually been caught and there is supposed to be a presumption of innocence in this country, so it is a little trickier than it seems.
However, at what point does the obviousness of their guilt override our institutions' ability to prove their use of steroids?
I think that's what has happened, at least in Bonds' case, and probably McGuire's too.
Now that woman was a "juicer."
Yet,to this day, her family and fans deny that she EVER took any drugs.
Yeah, sure.
