Michelle Wie makes cut on the number, thanks to a bogey in the last group of the second round of LPGA Championship

HAVRE DE GRACE (June 8, 2007) Somewhere within range of this sleepy area 40 minutes from Baltimore, Team Wie is jumping around. Or celebrating somehow. For Michelle Wie just made the cut in the LPGA Championship by the slimmest margin possible. Wie - and all the other players at 3 over who nobody (besides their families of course) sweated over - needed the last player putting in the last group on the course at Bulle Rock this evening (no name Karen Davies) to bogey 18 to make her score the magic number. Bogey delivered, Wie plays on and the weekend here is suddenly guaranteed to be full of subplots from a player who admits herself she has no chance to win. If this was the NBA, David Stern would be answering a whole lot of conspiracy theories right now. Maybe the golf gods simply couldn’t stand to see this major go on without the singular drama that is Wie. You can be sure of one thing. Some other 3 over players who thought they’d be playing in front of nobody today are suddenly going to have a whole lot of company. “I think it’s very important that I keep playing rounds,” Wie said before she left the course a good six hours ago. “Right now I’ve been sitting on my butt at home for four months and haven’t been doing that much. “Obviously hitting balls on the range and practicing on the practice green is completely different than playing out on the golf course.” Wie plays on. She has the chance to show even more toughness (and she’s shown some this tournament, no doubt). She also faces the prospect of the train wreck many of her peers have been silently hoping for in two more rounds. It’s going to be interesting. It always is with Wie. Comments:
Dude,
I haven't visited your column for a while. What's with the non-scathing Wie commentary?!? How I miss it!!! Being pro-Wie, I wanted to prostate myself before thee to say her non-88 withdrawal was bush. Whatever--guess I'll hunt for more entertaining Wie columns elsewhere... Dr. Chuck
1. Karen Davies did bogey 18 yesterday as well.
2. She knew she could make the cut with a bogey--but would miss with a double bogey. Under the circustances it would make sense for her to play the hole to give herself the best chance to do no worse than a bogey--and playing it that way could very easily lead to a bogey.
I'm not saying there is a conspiracy by any stretch Jim. I'm just saying it's funny how it worked out. Brings back visions of the NBA and its lottery ping pong balls to sports fans. That's not rigged either. But still interesting.
Oh and Davies has been paired with Wie in Saturday's third round. Wonder if Wie will thank her.
Chris,
I was watching the leaderboard, wondering if she would make the cut, as the cut line moved up and down. From checking some forums, many other people were doing the same. What other player could have so many people checking out the cut line with such anticipation. Ah such is the Michelle Wie saga. I don't know what she has, but she has something alright.
Miss Davies has been added to the Wie's Christmas card list after coming through in the clutch.
You must be making tons of money lately thanks to Michelle Wie. Send her some flower or something. She is making you rich.
The bar for Bubbles keeps getting lower and lower
The next big thing will be that she doesn't make a quintuple Bogey. What a circus. Her and Daly should team up together
She and Daly should team up=in fact they are good friends.
In fact Art, John is the one who recommended Michelle change the loft on her putter (yep I didn't know putters had lofts either) and the tip is still paying off for Michelle.
So in a strange sort of way, they did team up.

Didn't you guys see Greg Nared on his Blackberry? Just shortly after that he was conferring with Karen Davies on the sideline...Then she makes bogey. Hmmmmmmm?? lol!!
So, Wie-Wee plays on the weekend. Too bad those of us in T.V land won't get to see a good golf match between the leaders. I'm sure every camera will be on Wie-Wee. Just hope they have the camera ready when she PUKES!
I came back to this blog for a second and found a dozen Wie articles in a row.
You are complete nut, Balwin. Anybody with this much free time to worry about some kid and her latest whim needs to get a job with the tabloids. You're a real waste of skin. As for my take on Wie.... SHE'S A KID!!!
Jim C,
Certainly there was no conspiracy to get Bubbles in the Sunday pairings. The only thing that would get the conspiracy buffs going would be the actions of Ms. Bivens and her sidekick where Bubbles is concerned. When Karen Davies stood on the 17th tee yesterday at one over, there were 70 players including Davies attwo over or better. All the others whose play would have affected the cut line had completed their rounds. The only way that Bubbles and the others at three over could survive would have been for Karen to bogey the last two holes or go at least two over for the two holes in some other fashion. She obliged by doing just that. Conspiracy? Of course not! But what brings that possibility to mind is some of the suspicious conduct of Ms. Bivens and her sidekick lately where Bubbles is concerned. When it takes an extremely unusual set of circumstances for a certain thing to occur, and those things happen and the unlikely does occur, eyebrows are bound to be raised. For a few years before I began my present career, I was a police officer studying criminology. One of the articles of faith in the profession of detectives is that "there is no such thing as a coincidence". It would be interesting to note just how many golfers who made the cut at Bulle Rock finished their rounds with bogeys on their final two holes. This definitely NOT an accusation of conspiracy or collusion.
According to my statistician, one other golfer, Katherine Hull, bogeyed her last two holes and still made the cut. Katherine finished the two rounds at one under par.
If that figure is not quite right, you're going to have to cut my statistician some slack. She's my twelve year old granddaughter who despite her pronouncements, doesn't know everything yet. I'll be back with you jokers late this afternoon. The weather in the Chicagoland area is beautiful and I've got a 9:20 tee time.

Chris,
I think you're onto something with the conspiracy theory. As a matter of fact, I believe I have heard through my unreliable connections that Ms. Davies was granted a two year exemption by the LPGA and a lifetime annuity by the Wie foundation if she bogied the last hole. So, Alex, you see there perhaps was a conspiracy. Nevertheless, more importantly, we all hope you had a good game. Rick, Unfortunately your assessment of Mr. Baldwin's reporting from the LPGA is totally off base. His insight is quite refreshing when compared to the canned crap we get from the standard media types. Chris, while we don't always agree, your take on this tournament if fun to read.
And here I was, hoping for a Wie-Annika pairing. Now THAT little grudge match would have been fun to watch.
Rick: "You are complete nut, Balwin.
Anybody with this much free time to worry about some kid and her latest whim needs to get a job with the tabloids." ______________ He has a job to do to report on the lpga championship. Any reporter will report on the things that people are likely to want to read about. Despite your misgivings not that many people want to read about very many of the lpga players.
The cut line went up and down quite a bit. Not long before Karen Davies let about 14 players back into the tournament, another player Jackie Gallagher Smith who had been outside the cutline knocked in birdie on 16 followed by a hole in 1 on 17 to go inside the cutline. Players were moving in both directions.
Also, many other players got in as well as Wie, including Franchella, Steinhauer, Diaz and other good players.
Alex
Once Karen Davies bogeyed 17, she went to 18 knowing a bogey would make the cut for her, and a double wouldn't. While that turned out to be true for Michelle Wie and probably others as well, only Karen Davies knew it was true when she played the hole--and remember she did bogey the hole the day before. The real statistical comparison would be how often does a player who playd the last two holes par and bogey the day before go to 17 knowing she needs a bogey bogey finish to just make the cut, and get a bogey bogey finish.
I see that the exalted one is +8 through
11 holes, leaving her dead last by four strokes. Now I'm glad she made the cut. Dead last is a given, and possibly even by 10 shots if she actually decides to complete 72 holes to pick up her check.
Yes, I see that the Bubbles is doing a phenomenal job of cementing her last place position.
Myt God dead Last. Well that should have been Expected, Considering she was lucky or Unlucky to make the Cut
Sony and Nike reps must be drinking themselves to death
"I hit some awesome shots and I am a work in progress"
Those who make the cut cannot finish last. Those who didn't make the cut finish behind them. Even if Michelle were to shoot 150 in the 4th round, she would still have finished ahead of those who missed the cut by one shot.
It is sad how uneducated about golf some of the bashers are. To break it into simple terms: Debby Pinnel, Teresa Ishiguro and Minea Blomqvist were at +23 after two rounds. They finished in last place.
Michelle, I see that you had an 83 today with 8 bogeys, 2 double bogeys and 1 birdie. What is your response? Well, 1 birdie is certainly better than none!! I thought I played very well, but I just didn't get the breaks. It seemed that on every hole the rough just changed position and swallowed up my golf ball. On most of my putts, the hole seemed to get smaller whenever the ball got close to it. I feel that this is awesome experience before the U.S. Open, the tournament that I really, really, really want to play. Mr. Leadworser has a new driver for me to try and he guarantees that I will hit it at least 350 yards down the middle. Thank you Michelle for those profound comments.
Yeehaw, the bellyachers are having a feeding frenzy. ROFLMAO....
The agonies of the wie bashers, lol. Go Michelle !! Keep em happy, keep em bitching!!
By the time she finishes tomorrow's round she will be 23 over Par,then she will be dead last for sure. That's if she doesn't pull out due to her wrist injury she never even had in the first place. She faked it just for you Wiebots so you would keep pulling for her. Won't you dummys ever learn you??
Stanley needs a lesson in reading
comprehension. We all know what the cut means. OF THOSE WHO MADE THE CUT, your heroine is going to finish in dead last by an epic amount. I hope this helps, Stan. I hope you aren't like this in verbal conversation. If you have no friends, this would be the reason.
"I just need to keep working on it," Wie said. "My wrist has to get healing. I have to get strong, and I just have to play more, it's that simple. I feel like it's in me. I hit some really great tee shots, some really good second shots, some really clutch putts. And I just feel like it's getting better and better."
MmmHaaHaa
Booger, no amount of lessons in any discipline would help you, but keep on keeping on. You amuse the hell out of me.
Go Michelle!!
Actually putt, you dirty little monkey,
I'm not in the market for lessons in anything. I'm glad I amuse you, it's what keeps me alive.
wie Warriors,
The only thing remaining to see about the plunging career of Bubbles id this: Will Bubbles and her entourage have the hubris, the chutzpah, the unmitigated gall to continue to greedily accept all the remaining sponsors' exemptions. Will they graciously decline the ill-advised invitations to the John Deere, Canadian Women's Open, and the Samsung? Or will they continue the charade that is Bubbles and her entourage? If the past is any indication, BJ and Bo will continue to act as panderers for their poor daughter. After all, she is the cash cow for the family.
By the way guys, I shot an 84 today(members tees), only one more than Bubbles.
Of course, I'm a 63 year old amateur with a 14 handicap.
Hey Alex. Wow. 63. Man - I'm a whipper-snapper compared to you. I'm 62. Golf is a nice thing to share with the rest of your family. It was you that mentioned your grandaughter in a post right? Has she played yet? Does she like the game??
R.L.,
She hasn't played golf yet. Her mother and my daughters only play occasionally as does my wife. I only play maybe twenty times a tear myself. And not too well at that.
Well, Alex, it seems you're playing almost as well as Bubbles. And you only play 20 times a year. What's her excuse?
