At least Michelle Wie's 21-over is better than The Sopranos finish & David Chase copout

Win a free golf book!

In retrospect, Michelle Wie’s 21-over at the LPGA Championship was better than anyone thought. And I thought it was pretty good in terms of her finally showing toughness and professionalism.

It turns out a much worse finish was hoisted onto the American public Sunday night. That would be The Sopranos series finale when creator David Chase went with the ultimate black screen copout. Look I’m all for artistic freedom and taking a chance. I know what it’s like to try to produce something for heartless critics (see my Castle Baron Boss Mark Nessmith - if you can find him when his face is not stuffed with caviar and pizza bones).

But Chase isn’t being roasted - as he hides out in Paris - because he tried something different or innovative. People are upset about the way The Sopranos ended because Chase took the easy way out. He left it up in the air, up to interpretation, so that he and James Gandolfini can go back and do a Sopranos movie in five years if all their other projects don’t work out.

That’s not an artistic statement. That’s a crass commercialism emergency parachute.

There is something in golf even worse than The Sopranos finish though. Stay tuned for the latest WorldGolf.com newsletter to find out.

And don’t forget to check out BTuck reporting live from the U.S. Open all week. Tucker’s already defying convention but declaring that monster nearly 300 yard par 3 isn’t that big a thing. Tuck will always give you some original thinking.

Sorry Chris, still don't see how you equate a 21 over finish for Wie showing toughness or professionalism. If the injury is legit she shouldn't have been playing and if she would actually share information from a doctor on it then no one would second guess. But when you have her claiming one wrist is ailing and demonstrate the other is the problem on the course, and all the other things she did, there is no way you can say she was injured, and now way you can say she was "tough" for playing through it. As for professionalism, c'mon, 21 over is not a professional score. At least not the professional that we have been told is Wie.

Oh, and did you hear about the Vancouver kid who is the second youngest qualifier for the men's US Open. Now there is a story. He actually qualified for something. Much like Tadd from last year. These are good golf stories, we can only hope the Wie stories will fade to nothing at least until she proves she is worthy of any attention at all.

Actually putt4par, she waived her privacy rights by using the injury as her excuse for EVERYTHING. If, as a professional, you are going to use an injury as an excuse for disgracing the game, disrespecting those that have given you opportunities, and (though I'm not one) failing your fans, then you have the obligation to tell the truth and be able to back it up with some proof. That is an obligation a professional has.

Comment from: putt4par [Visitor] Email
No,smudge, that is an obligation that you as a fan have demanded.
It is not however "owed" to you.
She did not waive any rights by turning professional. That, again, is something you may demand but it is not "owed" to you or any other fan.
Therein lies the difference.

putt4par,

Reluctantly, I have to agree with you on this one.

Bubbles doesn't owe anyone, including her devoted fans one single thing.

And it's a good thing because her fans are getting precious little from her lately. It doesn't seem to make any difference to them either.
They are still enthralled with her very existence.

It doesn't do much for her public image; one would think she would want to convey a more open and factual persona.

She has said that she owes nobody an apology for anything, apparently common courtesy is not in her vocabulary. I use the word vocabulary advisedly.

But you're absolutely correct putt4par, 17 year old juveniles don't owe a thing to any adult no matter their stature in the golf world or anywhere else.

However, honest, forthrightness, and respect will make a lot more friends than will a defiant, pugnacious and snotty attitude from a spoiled brat.

Actually smudge does have that right as a fan. He has the right to demand anything he wants, and if he doesn't get it he has a right to no longer be a fan of the team or player in question. If smudge decides on this or any other basis that he no longer wishes to be a fan of Michelle Wie, I support him 100 per cent, and I hope he will support me 100 per cent in my decision to remain a Michelle Wie fan.

By the way Wie was playing the past two weeks, it is obvious that her wrist injury is legit. No one plays that bad all of a sudden. Why fake an injury that long? And playing without a driver for the majority of the tournament is going too far, if she was faking. How about David Leadbetter- Do you think she fooled him? If she is faking, then maybe she should become an actress.
I think when Chris says she is "finally showing toughness and professionalism," he meant how she is handling the criticism that everyone is dishing out.
Well, in the next couple of years let's see if she has ruined her career forever.

Sheesh, having to agree with Alex is really galling...,but Jim C and Alex both have some valid points. *gasp*

I was only commenting on what smudge said was owed to him as a fan. All too often the fans feel that they own a sports figure. You don't like that person, quit watching or paying for tickets. And this idea that I keep hearing of stuff being shoved down ones throat ...ROFLMAO.. you're all big boys and girls, turn the damn tv or radio off if you are offended. But having it shoved down your throats???? I don't think so. Only if you are willing.

Jim C was correct in his evaluation as was Alex.

We cannot do anything about a players attitude or a fans attitude, but there is no way that any professional sports figure owes anything to a fan. Now, the sponsor is another thing altogether and that is where the Wies may get into a lot of hot water.

Alex said: "But you're absolutely correct putt4par, 17 year old juveniles don't owe a thing to any adult no matter their stature in the golf world or anywhere else."

Wow, all of a sudden you recognize that she is still a juvenile....lol, go Alex.

Ok, couldn't resist but what about her advisors?
Everyone is so quick to bash the kid when in fact the advisors are more than likely at fault. Who knows what advice was given to Michelle.
If your advisors give you a script to follow and the sponsors are paying you to follow the advice of their people…..
All I can say is that I am sure glad she isn’t my daughter.
After having read some of the comments and advice that has been published in some blogs, I’d be sorely tempted to rip some heads off if they suggested those things to my daughter.

Of course, I am 100% respectful of your right and the rights of all Wiebots to worship Bubbles, her parents, and her throng of agents and hangers on.

You folks are true believers in Bubbles. You are not dissuaded or discouraged in the least with her dismal showings in the past year.

And although I can't understand it, I almost grudgingly admire such blind faith and adoration.

But tell me Wie-wee's, if your worst nightmare comes to fruition, and Bubbles quits the game of golf altogether, what and/or who will become the next fad you guys will glom onto? Or will you be similar to the kooks who are still waiting for Elvis to make a comeback?

I heard somewhere that disco might make a return to popularity. There's a thought.

The Anti-Wie crowd may get their wish of Michelle having to "qualify" for a tournament,

The Richo Women's British Open.

Based on the latest Rolex ranking Michelle quietly slipped into 31st place which takes away the excuse of granting her an exemption based on the top thirty from the Rolex rankings.

Because she finished in the top thirty at the 2006 event she is exempt from pre-qualifying, but only the top fifteen are exempt from "final" qualifying.

If she does well in the U.S. Women's Open or wins she will not need to qualify, if not, she will need to Monday qualify.

putt4double and Jim C. I'm not demanding a doctor's note. I already know the injury is fake, because no one with a legitimate injury would shroud it with such secrecy. Look at Phil. As a professional he withdrew and then had his injury confirmed and shared with the press and the Tour that he had an MRI, that it was OK, not broken and that he would hopefully be back soon. Nothing at all from Wie. No explanation to the LPGA, Annika or anyone else. As for her not having any obligations as a professional to prove her injury, Again you are wrong. Any employee has the duty to provide proof of an injury or illness to mis work. If you can tell me that she provided adequate proof to Bivens or Annika (who really was her employer that week) then I'll concede the point. However, absent that, and withdrawing with an excuse of an injury which any reasonable person would conclude was fake, then I think she has failed the game, the tour, and her fans.
Permalink 2007-06-14 @ 16:06
Comment from: putt4par [Visitor] Email
First of all, she is not an employee. The LPGA and the PGA make every effort to explain to the public that each player is an independent contractor.
Michelle is not a member of the LPGA so does not need to give any formal information to the LPGA or to Annika. She was given an invitation by Annika to play, which is not the same as offering employment.
The other part of that is the MW was given a sponsors exemption into the tournament. If she owes anyone an explanation, the sponsors would be the people to get it. If they chose not to share with you the results of any medical information, then you won't hear anything from them.

There is no legal obligation for any player who is not a member of the LPGA to share any medical information with Bivens or anyone else from that organization. (Or the general public either for that matter.)

Again, let me reiterate here. Neither Michelle Wie nor any other non-tour member/golfer is obliged to share any information that she doesn't wish to divulge.
While you may feel the frustration and the anger of what she is doing, you can demand all you want and she is legally within her right to tell you nothing.

The other point I want to make is that although you may suspect the injury is a fake, you cannot prove that. No, just because they refuse to answer your questions, doesn't make it a fake either.

Your conclusions are your own. (Which are also the conclusions of many others, by the way.)

I am not trying to make you look stupid or silly or anything by telling you these things, just pointing out what is already in the public domain. Demand what you will, until the Wie camp is ready to talk, there is not one thing you can do about it other than what you are doing now and that is complain. Oh, and you can just tune out the LPGA, Michelle Wie, Nike, Sony and all Wies advisors and all the sports reporters and sports bloggers that are making huge mileage from repeating all the stories about MW.
The sooner everyone quits talking about her, the sooner the stories will go away.

Smudge,
Michelle Wie doesn't have to furnish any proof to the lpga tour.
Even full members of the lpga don't have to give evidence of injuries if they withdraw from events.
The only time they have to give evidence is if they are applying for a medical exemption where they miss quite a bit of the season and want to be given a waiver that they wouldn't lose their playing rights on tour.

smudge,

What putt-putt and Stanley seem to be saying is that Bubbles and her entourage are invoking golf's version of the fifth amendment.

They don't want to be tripped up by having their time lines confused or any conflicting information from doctors, so they simply say all such data is "private". And it is private.

Of course, they could lift the shroud of suspicion if they would simply tell the truth.

Barring that unlikely happening, you'll just have to be satisfied that Bubbles says she had a severe injury of something, at some time, and at some place.

Even Annika hosted the Ginn Tribute event, she should not openly criticize MW for her withdrawal due to whatever reason. The benefit of doubt should go to the one who withdrawn. Annika might think she was losing face as she was the host. In fact Annika showed no class and no respect at all in this cat fight event. The victim was MW. Injury is injury and it affects golf players at different levels. You could get better after 1-2 days or 1-2 weeks of rest. Annika said she can’t pick up her club after a week due to her neck injury is irrelevant to other injured players. It was a stupid remark.

Bobby Ginn, the event "Sponsor" was the one who gave Michelle a sponsor's exemption. Annika is prohibited from entering an event if she sponsored it (something about conflict of interest).

Michelle did get a conference call asking her to join the event and I think Annika asked her to play and Michelle responded, "Oh Annika how cool you want me to play in your event, you know Annika I just got my cast off two weeks ago and I am not really ready to play.

I believe Annika responded with, "Oh Michelle please come so we can add your name to the entry list and maybe get network coverage of the event, with more media and fans attending".

Michelle responded with, "You know Annika I really really want to play in the Ginn, but I just don't know if my game is any good enough with my short time in rehab".

I believe Annika responded with, "don't worry about it Michelle, all we need is for you to show up to set the hook, I was talking with Vince McMann the other day and he was saying we could create some great publicity if you withdraw and we have a spat".

I always thought women's professional golf should be a little more like the old WWF or maybe even Roller derby to spice things up.

Let us look at some Annika history. There was the Creamer incident late in 2005. Cremer said she saw a reasonable straight tee shot, while Anniks said the tee shot turned near the end of its flight befire going into the water, so she would be able to put her ball much further up the fairway. Either one of these players misrepresented what she saw, or they saw things differently. The ruling went in Annika' favor not because of any evidence supporting her view--but because she was the player.

Then there was the Webb incident early the next year, where Annika cleaned a ball, and after Webb told her she could not do so, she got a 2 stroke penalty. Annika has a reputation for knowing the rules like an official, so one might reasonably wonder whether she really didn't know she was in violation of the rules when she moved her ball. Here the penalty was applied, but her action in cleaning her ball was officially assumed to be an honest mistake rather than an attempt at cheating. This was the same official assumption that was made regading Michelle at the Samsung and Weetabix.

Now for the Ginn Tribute. Michelle said she wasn't 100 per cent prior to the start. Even without a tweaking of the injury, there was an injury.

Apparently the LPGA was not willing to grant Michelle an injury exemption from the 88 rule, or at least they were not willing to do so beforehand, and so there was no guarantee they would do so if she actually shot 88 or above. It sounds like the LPGA told her she could withdraw with an injury if she wished, but if she were healthy enough to finish her round, she was healthy enough to be banned for a year if she didn't do better than 88. That is a situation that Annnika has never faced.

There is also the general question of withdrawls in the face of the 88 rule. Since the rule was made in response to two players who would not withdraw when asked to do so, it sounds to me like withdrawing in the face of the threat of the 88 rule is acting in accordance with the rule.

Unlike Wie however, the fans (or at least most of us) had a decent grip an reality. Something is bad wrong with Wie's game right now, and all of you Wie-wees seem to be in a fog. Her alleged wrist injury is recent, but she has not scored below par in nearly one year. Her accuracy concerning fairways and greens is horrible. While you guys are clearly loyal fans, you need to wake up and smell the coffee......She in is the top 50 of the most wealthy athletes (I believe she was 22nd), yet she has never won (other than an amature event) nor has she broken par in 11 months. Unless there is some big turn around soon in her game, she may go down in history as the most over rated athlete in the history of sports.

Let's try a test to determine Putt4par's current mental state. Putt4par, this will require you to stop thinking about sandboxes, but thats ok, it's only one question.

Putt4par, assuming Bubbles enters the PGA John Deer Classic next month, I, Putt4par, predict she will do the following:

(a) Make the cut.
(b) Make the cut, end up in the top 20.
(c) Make the cut, win the tournament.
(d) Make the cut, win the tournament, and set the course record.
(e) Fail to break par, miss the cut, hold her wrist while cameras are pointed at her, claim that she learned a lot and knows what she needs to work on to justify competing against the men, and continues to make silly excuses for her sub-par performance.

Putt4par, if you answered anything other than "e" you need to be placed in a straightjacket, handcuffed, gagged, and deported to Iran.

Alex, have you been palming your geriatric meds to Lance again?
He's delusional about someone named bubbles. Is that a referrence that you would recognize?

It looks like he is wetting himself again, maybe you should share your depends with him.

Oh, btw Lance, if you want to go to Iran, talk to your buddy, Mr. Bush. He may have a spot for you in his mercanaries. Those civil contractors that are now his army of choice.

And do take Alex and judge Smails with you. Maybe the Iranians will have a cure for your delusions.

Putt4par,

Your clever response failed to answer the simple question directed to you. It really is quite easy, even for someone who is challenged like yourself. You simply answer a, b, c, d, or e. I would hate to see your score on the GRE exam; but then again, you probably never got out of the sand box long enough to take it.

What does President Bush have to do with this? I am a republican, but he is not my favorite president. You are truly a Wie-wee; you fail to answer the question, but then change the subject to something totally off the wall.

"and deported to Iran."

"What does President Bush have to do with this? I am a republican,"
"you fail to answer the question, but then change the subject"

Gee, I wonder what that had to do with my answer.
And I was taking lessons from you and the ambulance chaser in regards to ignoring your ridiculous questions.

You and Alex are both very good at ignoring reality, so I fed some to you but of course neither of you are really aware of anything real in your dream world and missed it yet again.
Go borrow some more meds from Alex, maybe you can through your stressed out day.
You really should take a rest. Go play in Alex sandbox again for a while.

Putt4par,

You consider the quesiton ridiculous because you can not answer it (or at least will no answer it). You have the nerve to use the word "reality", but you constantly mention this "sandbox". Most of the Wie-wees that post on these blogs are deranged, but you clearly top them all.

By the way, the correct answer to the question that you failed to answer was e. As ignorant as you clearly are, even you probably knew that answer to this one.

Tsk, tsk, tsk, Lance. Are you feeling a wie bit heated? roflmao, you need to go get your head read.

Don't be absurd, you and Alex aren't even on the same continent as reality.

As for your ignorance.... hehehe, you clearly win that award.
Now back to your sandbox, Wie man.

You really can't seem to let this sand box thing go can you?

This is my last post on this article. I look forward to making fun of you on future articles....LR

PS - I think you would really like Iran, you would fit is so well over there.

Oh, and one more time in case you forgot....the answer to the question was "e."

In case you haven't figured it out yet, you and the ambulance chaser and Judge Smails are the only ones that seem to get upset about things pertaining to Wie.

Seems to me that you and Alex are the guys with the fixation for dumb meaningless questions, insults and bashing of teenagers.

The reference to the sandbox ( I know you are a little slow here) is for you and Alex to go play with your toys. The childrens corner for you, sonny.

putt4par,

Since you, as a cowardly Canuck, are unable to defend yourself like the rest of your gutless countrymen, should be down on your knees thanking President Bush for the protection of your worthless country, are you ready to apologize to our Mr. President as well as to all Americans?

Alex, you have just shamed your country, your countrymen and all armed forces people in both our countries.
Where do you get off insulting my country or my countries people like you have just done?

The stupidity and the arrogance of your statements call for an apology. You are without a doubt, the most useless, most insulting, most despicable piece of human flotsam on these blogs.
You, sir, are a total waste of skin.

Shame on you.

No where have I insulted or belittled your countrymen in any form that would deserve that attack.. You on the other hand have constantly made derogatory and insulting comments about my country, my province and a city in that province.

I strongly urge you to check in to the nearest psychologist and have the bump on your shoulders checked out for signs of brainwave activity.

Oh-oh!

putt-putt is mad as hell and he's not going to take it anymore!

It is a fact that the Armed? Forces of Canuckistan are about as useless as teats on a boar hog.

Canada doesn't have the ability or the desire to defend itself against its enemies. Its national will is similar to that of France.

That's why it's smart for Canada to rely on the good old USA for protection.

Alex, you disgrace your government, your people and yourself with the stupidity you are spouting in this blog.

But then what can one expect from a spoiled little baby like you.
Need a sucky to go to sleep with, Wie man?

I guess I had better give you the last word.

The way you're getting your dander up, you're liable to come over here and hit me with your purse.
