Woody Austin, golf's Will Ferrell, makes Presidents Cup worthwhile with lake fall
The difference between Woody Austin and Will Ferrell is that Austin doesn’t know he’s a jackass while Ferrell relishes it. It doesn’t matter though. Austin still manages to entertain by making a fool out of himself - without even trying.
The latest and greatest comes in Austin tumbling face first into a lake in the second day of the Presidents Cup. Sure, there have been times I thought I’d fall in the water or tumble down a hill while golfing. But I’m not a PGA Tour player.
Remember, in theory, these guys are supposed to be professional athletes.
Of course that theory doesn’t really apply to Austin. He’s golf’s big goofball, but he doesn’t seem to realize it. He takes himself more seriously than a Marine, with his fiery talk about challenging Tiger Woods. Then he goes plunging into a pond while his teammates crack up.
Do you think anyone on the America team is chuckling if Tiger slipped into the water? There’d be more stonefaced look aways than you get at a prison camp.
The quotes Austin’s own teammates gave were classic too.
“You couldn’t see who it was because his head was underwater,” Steve Stricker told the Associated Press. “But you figured it had to be Woody.”
This is Steve Stricker, who’s never been in danger of being compared to Chris Rock. Woody just brings it out.
He now has one of the all-time classic sports moments too. Austin’s swan dive is destined to go down with the tumble from that skier on the Wide World of Sports opening back in the day. Woody’s a classic. He just doesn’t know it.
For more from Montreal, remember to check out Jeff White’s live reporting on WorldGolf.com throughout the weekend. Maybe he’ll fall into a lake to reeanct the Presidents Cup’s greatest moment.
