Golf courses charging extra on Veterans Day a disgrace

Win a free golf book!

Like many Americans, I spent Veterans Day golfing. Unlike most I was working - and if you saw my swing - you’d realize it definitely qualifies as work - but it’s still great to see so many golfers out having a good time.

Until, you realize that many of them are paying extra. On Veterans Day.

Look, it’s bad enough that the golf industry hasn’t been able to come together in anything near mass and offer veterans free golf on Veterans Day and Memorial Day. But to charge the people who have given this country such selfless service a holiday rate on their day is absurd.

Sure, everyone who pays extra on Veterans Day has not served in the Armed Forces. But just the fact that some have should put an end to this immediately.

Charge us all the weekend rate on Columbus Day, Presidents Day, Valentine’s Day, National Give a Homemade Gift Day (true holiday), heck every third Wednesday if you must. Just leave Veterans Day alone. Let the Vets play for the regular weekday green fee at least.

I’m not going to pretend like I know what it’s like to be a veteran. I’m the wimp of my family. I have an older brother who served in the Navy, a younger brother who enlisted in the Marines only to tear up his knee in training and need surgery and a crazy late grandfather who flew fighter planes for the Irish.

But I know what it looks like when vets are getting dirt kicked in their faces. Or in this case, nice fine golf course bunker sand.

Let the vets play for free! One day a year.
