"Coke or heroin, free samples," a Nassau, Bahamas street call
Monday January 28, 2008 | 16:39:30 247 words, 2797 views
Travel enough and you’ll come across your share of shady places. I’ve been in a bar in Mexico where the roaches scurrying across the table are bigger than the beer bottles and you have to be drunker than you’ve ever been to stomach it. I’ve been chased by a group of would-be muggers through the narrow streets of the French Quarter long before Hurricane Katrina. I’ve been in Texas border towns where you wonder if the Constitution still applies. Heck, I’ve just walked around South Beach late at night - by far the seediest tourist spot of all. South Beach can make Mexico (where the supposed seediness is usually vastly overblown and often downright untrue) look like Disney World. Still in all my travels, I’ve never been approached on the street in the middle of the day and offered drugs. Until I visited the Bahamas. There, strolling through the streets of downtown Nassau, near where the unbelievably massive cruise ships dock (including Disney cruises), a guy called out to tourists who passed close by, “Coke or heroin, free samples.” Now, I admit I don’t have TravelGolf.com Tim McDonald’s speed-popping construction work experience (or his beating up surfers experience for that matter), but who’s taking “free samples” of cocaine or heroin from some street pusher? Especially the same week that Heath Ledger may have wittingly or unwittingly did himself in on drugs. And aren’t free samples supposed to be limited to stuff like dishwashing detergent? Ah, the Bahamas.

It ends up just being baking soda - there really are no "too good to be true" deals in the Caribbean.
I've had the same thing happen to me in Nassau.
And Coki Beach in the Virgin Islands, a serious tourist spot, with all kinds of kids running around, cops literally dozens of feet away. And Kingston, Jamaica (once in a government building). And Port of Spain, Trinidad. Actually, pretty much anywhere I've visited or lived in the Caribean, you can get dope like in the U.S. you'd go to a convenience store and get a Snickers.
Chris: Give me a call W-518 270 1130 or send me your cell number?
Thanks, Bill
Chris,
Can you call me in Nassau at 242-356-2555 extl. 264. I'm looking for reprint permission
More time now...
I recall in Jamaica in the 1980s being offered weed by the guy helping get our bags off the carousel in the airport. Then by the taxi driver. Then by the guy at the hotel. Then every few yards on the street. Interestingly, the only offer of something else (coke) was from an old white guy on the beach at Negril (way back when Negril was nearly empty -- the old guy walked WAY out into the surf to make the offer to me). I understand hard drugs are far more common these days. Oh, and BTuck--the weed was so NOT oregano.
This guy is to anti-Bahamas!
Sigh!!!! What's wrong Chris Baldwin? What did the Bahamas do to you that you want to discredit and entire people? This is one of many attacks on the Bahamas you have launched, shame on you. J. Miller Toronto, Canada
I am a Bahamian and I live in the Bahamas and while I am not surprised at this episode, I think its fair to point out that this little incident is another case of simple economics. Supply and demand.
Being an islander who used to offer help to visitors lost and having given rides to complete strangers at zero cost ever only to be asked if I have any weed or know where they can score some coke, can you really blame some enterprising individual with poor values for going corporate with his drug sales? Maybe people in the islands and in the other seedier locales will stop offering North Americans drugs when the gringos stop asking for them. Just a thought. Spring break is around the corner and I'll be damned if some blonde haired, blue eyed 20 year old from Nebraska doesn't ask me where all the good weed spots are. Thats life Chris. Too bad you didn't point out if you took the sample or not. To Miller, its not attacking the country if its true and you and I know that this is entirely possible in Nassau.

Why was'nt this reported to the police ? Could it be because you are haboring some sort negative feelings about the Bahamas.
we would be interested in knowing precisely where the incident occured? whether the incident was reported? whether Mr Baldwin took the samples? Were the samples authentic? Do you have a description of the individual? As a world traveller, writing a blog in a professional journal, I wondered whethe Baldwin took any photos with his, and everybody else's phone/camera. Such info should be forwarded to the Police at 242 323-4444.

All I can say is that as a Bahamian living in the Bahamas, I have NEVER seen anything like that happen, and I am ALWAYS in the Bay Street area. But if it did, it should have been reported to the cops. Other than that ANYONE can make up a good story like this, its not that hard to do....

1) For all the Nassau 'apologists' - this sort of thing happens ALL the time whether you wish to acknowledge it or not...and also in Freeport, Port Lucaya, and every other 'destination' spot I've been to in the last 10 years.
2) As a 'world-travelled journalist' I sincerely doubt that Baldy is going to be offering up any assistance to the local police. And ALSO, that "status" confers on him the duty to write about what he finds...so J Millet, KC, and Tony need to just get over their hurt feelings when a painful (but truly minor) truth is pointed out. 3) BTuck...Im sorry your experiences were so disapointing. Guess that 'child-like demeanor' of yours led the street folks to believe they could rip your dumb a** off without fear of reprisal...*wink*....maybe next time you can go with Kiel!

I think that as a journalist your information was poorly resources and displayed no real concern for a problem of drug solicitation. You seemed only interested in makin;\g a mockery of an entire people that has so unfairly stigmatised Bahamians. Should Bahamians have the same impression of Americans; as of course it is no secret that the U.S. is one of the leading illegal drug-infested countries of the world. Is this the hallmark of good journalism? If so, then watch out whoever crosses Chris Baldwin, cuz you too will be in for a treat!
