Aquaman lives at World Match Play!: Woody Austin boots Adam Scott with late rally
MARANA, Ariz. (Feb. 21, 2008) - For much of his second round match with Adam Scott, the PGA Tour’s Aquaman wanted to drown himself.
At least, if he could take his putter with him.
Woody Austin - who’s hearing it from the fans here about his lake dive in Montreal too - viewed his putter as a weapon of self destruction for much of the WGC Accenture Match Play Championship’s second day.
Austin wasn’t just missing makeable putts. He was three-jacking holes, handing four holes to Scott like a butler providing a hot towel. This included what Austin just called “the worst putt in the history of golf” on No. 8. No wonder he was two down to Scott with five holes to go.
Then, Austin showed why he’s one of the best fighters on the PGA Tour. He tied it up on 18 thanks to a bunker save with more guts than a mountain lion (which a media courtesy bus driver claimed he saw on The Gallery Golf Club at Dove Mountain early Wednesday evening). Then, Austin beat Scott with a birdie on the first extra hole.
Think Scott was pissed? He quickly turned and stalked right back up the first fairway without speaking to the few reporters who weren’t following Tiger Woods.
That’s Austin though. He’ll surprise you with a butt kicking out of the blue.
Remember, for complete daily coverage live from the Gallery, check out WorldGolf.com every day. Tomorrow morning, you’ll get a full column on how Austin is much more original than even you’ve heard - and it has nothing to do with water dives or those god-ugly shirts he used to wear (the shirt company actually asked him to stop wearing them this year because of all the rips they took).
It has a lot to do with how he treats his wife.
