Tiger Woods destroys Stewart Cink 8-and-7 in Match Play finale, can't wait to chide passed Arnold Palmer

MARANA, Ariz. (Feb. 24, 2008) - Still don’t think Tiger Woods knows every possible record and piece of golf history he’s approaching?

Almost as soon as Woods put his hands around that weird porcelain-egg-looking, genie-bottle-like trophy for blowing out Stewart Cink 8-and-7 in the WGC Accenture Match Play Championship final, he talked Arnold Palmer.

Tiger knew enough to forget Stewie (if only all of us who witnessed his putrid play at the Gallery Golf Club today could put it out of our mind so easily). Woods passed Palmer for all-time PGA Tour wins with 63, moved only one behind Ben Hogan and a mere 20 of breaking Sam Snead’s all-time mark. Tiger more than anyone knows that is the scorecard he’s playing on, not 8-and-7 over the Stewies of the world.

“I can’t wait to see Arnie,” Tiger said, grinning.

Yes, Woods is going to trash talk the old man. Hey, he’s earned it. And Palmer will probably try and give it back too - about not having played when they’re were so many meek Stewies on Tour - as futile an argument as that is.

“I can’t say what I’m going to say,” Woods said of his next Palmer encounter. “Never mind. When I see him, I will give him an earful, and I’m sure he’ll probably do the same.”

Remember to tune into WorldGolf.com tomorrow for a complete wrapup of the tournament, including a column on this largely too-easily accepted idea that Tiger’s dominance is good for golf with TV ratings, attendance and the like. You’ll also meet the loneliest man in golf when Woods plays.
