So much for Lorena Ochoa being the women's Tiger Woods, she's done at the U.S. Women's Open
EDINA, Minn. - It’s 12:09 p.m. here on a rain-delayed Saturday at the U.S. Women’s Open and Lorena Ochoa is done as a contender. The No. 1 ranked player in women’s golf - the player with two career major wins who’s been ridiculously compared to Tiger Woods when she hasn’t even earned the right to be compared to Annika Sorenstam yet - just played herself out of another major.
Starting on her third round on the 10th hole, Ochoa went bogey, double bogey, bogey on 11, 12 and 13, putting her at 5-over for the Open, a whopping 11 shots out of the lead and out of it. Even the birdie Ochoa just recorded on the par 3 14th is not going to save this sinking star.
After finishing her second round at 1-over, Ochoa talked of changing her approach. “I think I need to be more aggressive,” she said.
That didn’t backfire as much as Ochoa didn’t execute. After playing much too cautiously on a U.S. Women’s Open course that’s been set up for birdies - one with five par 5s that Ochoa, the longest driver on the LPGA Tour was supposed to feast on, but instead has found only famine - Ochoa needed to start firing at pins.
She couldn’t pull it off though.
Now might be the time to call Ochoa on her performance in the majors too. She’s a star, but she does not deserve any of this legend talk until she collects more big hardware. Sorenstam has 10 majors on her resume. Are you really so sure that Ochoa’s ever going to come close to challenging that mark?
