Finchem's will not good for PGA Tour and FedEx(lax) Cup
Thursday August 24, 2006 | 12:31:56 282 words, 943 views
Tim Finchem is seriously misguided or head-in-the-sand delusional when it comes to how golf fans view the PGA Tour. (This is a separate issue from his head-in-the-sand approach to drugs in the world of professional golf.) Finchem has the belief that the PGA Tour golf season absolutely must have a definitive finish with a champion determined and he is totally committed to that plan whether we like it or not. That fact is painfully obvious when you consider the creation of the FedEx(lax) Cup which begins next year. (You’ll have to go to www.pgatour.com to get ... full post »

Tiger Woods and the game of golf
Monday August 21, 2006 | 08:26:24 162 words, 1660 views
Thank goodness golf has Tiger Woods. GolfWeek recently ran a two-part series on Tiger and his impact on the game. Thousands of words were written, a few stats were tossed about, and some perceptive evaluation was attempted, but it all boiled down to one bottom line fact: Without Tiger Woods golf would be heading in the same direction as Mel Gibson’s career.
If you approach this evaluation objectively, you know in your heart of hearts that Tiger is the heartbeat of the game. As long as he keeps playing that’s the way it will be. All of the ... full post »

Today is the day that the golf world discovers the courses where the Tin Cups really got their start. It is the launch date of our newest book Off the Beaten Cart Path published by Wiley Press. (Simply click the book cover below to purchase a copy. You can also get a look at Can I Get a Ruling? our previous offering.) Off the Beaten Cart Path contains stories of nineteen golf courses that are located in the hamlets and highlands where golfers seldom look for a game. There’s a few pictures and some interesting anecdotes about each course. You ... full post »
Tiger, Phil and the Scribes at Medinah
Wednesday August 16, 2006 | 12:23:19 455 words, 935 views
Okay, I couldn’t stand it any longer. I read a few of the questions posed by the venerable scribes at the pre-PGA Championship news conferences and thought y’all might be interested in partaking in the humor. Now, please, bear in mind that these are writers who the PGA of America has deemed qualified to cover its biggest tournament of the year. Sort of gives “Glorys Last Chance” a whole new meaning.
Poor Tiger:
Q: My doctor doesn’t think that golf is a very physical game, but you have a lot of ups and downs here at Medinah. How would you rate ... full post »
The LPGA and Caddiegate
Tuesday August 15, 2006 | 10:22:22 163 words, 1141 views
The ladies of the LPGA are doing their darn well best to get the attention off the trials and tribulations of the administration and focused on them. Unfortunately, the attention is not following their action with the clubs. It’s focusing on caddiegate.
Quick now, who won the Women’s British Open? Chances are you know what happened the day after (Michelle Wie fired her caddie. Well, she didn’t; some stiff from the Wie camp did.) rather than the fact that Sherri Steinhauer won. Wie and company quickly got the attention off Steinhauer’s victory.
Then six days later after finishing a close second to ... full post »
Sad news in the golf world; Clarke's wife passes away
Sunday August 13, 2006 | 09:38:02 59 words, 1264 views
One of the nicest golfers on the planet has been dealt the ultimate bad bounce by the golf gods. Heather Clarke, wife of Irishman Darren Clark, passed away early Sunday morning. At least the golf gods were gentle; it is reported that she died peacefully.
For a good initial report on Darren and his wife try Mark Garrod’s story.

Everything you wanted to know about Natalie Gulbis, but were afraid to ask
Wednesday August 9, 2006 | 10:47:36 177 words, 1430 views
The Eye On Golf staff is a big fan of Natalie Gulbis. (No, the staff is not all male.) We were all heartbroken when she lost in a playoff just three weeks ago. And we’re all hoping she doesn’t develop AK Syndrome.
We are, however, not groupies. We follow her golf exploits and don’t pry into her private life - unless, of course, it is presented to us on a silver platter, or, in this case, in an electronic article. SI.com the same electronic magazine that brought you compelling blogs and commentary from the British Open, has a marvelous cheesecake ... full post »
Michelle Wie demonstrates the highest level of immaturity
Saturday August 5, 2006 | 11:01:10 289 words, 1673 views
In my last several posts I have tried to refrain from comment-eliciting, M. Wie information. It has made life much easier, thought provoking opinions that have generated no comments from discerning readers. However, that is no more. Wie’s comments after her penalty assessment in the second round of the WWBO demand a written observation.
And that is, in short, immaturity, and an admitted immaturity no less. “So it’s a good learning experience. But I’m only 16,” testifies to that. And it’s not so much that she DQ’d in her first pro tournament, it’s her “I refuse to learn attitude,” that ... full post »
Why the PGA and the LPGA Tours are being dominated by the Australians and the Korean respectively
Thursday August 3, 2006 | 10:00:41 304 words, 751 views
The PGA Tour is slowly being captured by the Australians this year. The LPGA is being dominated by South Koreans. And I think I have discovered the reasons why. After careful analysis, I seriously doubt it has anything to do with golfing ability. Rather it is more cosmic in nature. It has more to do with the axis of the earth and the equator. You see, because of global warming and the resulting effects (and, please, no environmental comments), there has been a miniscule shift in the earth’s axis. This ever so slight readjustment of the earth has caused a ... full post »
