Woosnam is brilliant with selection of Clarke for Ryder Cup

Ian Woosnam may be about the smartest man on the face of this golfing earth. (And if he only could count.) If golf tournaments and matches were won on inspiration alone, the upcoming Ryder Cup Matches at the K Club in Ireland would be a sure bet for the European squad. (PGA Punter, please take notice.) Woosnam’s captain’s selection of Darren Clarke, although it was a foregone conclusion, was nonetheless brilliant. We all know of Clarke’s ancestry and the recent death of his wife, so what better choice to instill inspiration for the team and the European fans. He also chose Lee Westwood who is experienced, but it really didn’t matter. He could have chosen Jean Van de Velde. Once Woosnam had selected Clarke, the outcome of the matches was never in doubt.

ASIDE: Hey, it’s too bad he didn’t pick old Vandy. Can you imagine the final singles match between Vandy and Phil in which they battle it out to the last hole for the last point to determine the winner of the Ryder Cup? What do you think the last hole would produce?

The selection of Clarke will provide more than enough drive and motivation for a European team that hardly needs more spunk. I pity the poor American side.
