Couples delivers

The women still love Freddy. That’s what I learned at last week’s Save-Mart Shootout, a charity event in Madera (just outside Fresno, Calif.). As the featured attraction at this year’s event, Fred Couples delivered on all counts. (For more, check out the Fresno Bee’s report.) Gotta give Couples props for stepping up, especially considering what he went through just to get to Fresno.

After finishing up at the Dunhill Links Championship in Scotland on Sunday, he flew right to Fresno, getting in at 11p.m. He fell asleep at about 1 a.m, then got up in time for a clinic at 9 a.m. Wonder if Tiger would’ve done the same….

Best part about Couples is his candor. Asked why he’s no longer consistently challenging for major titles, Couples gave two reasons: health and motivation.

“I’m not always healthy,” he told the Fresno Bee’s Ken Robison. “And my motivation doesn’t last long. I can play well now and then, and that’s good enough for me.”

If only all athletes were this honest.
