Time to fix the Skins Game

Apparently I wasn’t the only one who avoided last weekend’s Skins Game. About 80% of the mail so far has agreed with my assessment that the event has turned into a giant waste of time (contrary to fellow blogger Jason Scott’s assertion).

Several readers wrote in w/good ideas to change the Skins Game, with the best idea coming from R. Roland: “The skins game would be of some interest if the participants put up their own money. Otherwise it’s a joke. “

When that happens - and don’t hold your breath, friends - I’ll be happy to give the Skins Game another shot.

Players putting up their own money would be interesting but will never happen . . . it would come off as an endorsement for gambling. What the Skins Game needs: (1) televise all 18 holes; (2) forget the graduated payouts where the 18th hole is worth ten zillion dollars more than the first six holes (why should it be?); (3) reinstate the Stymie rules (where players don't have to mark their balls on the green); (4) make it an international foursome of current top MALE players (even if you have to pre-record it to accommodate vacation schedules);(5) deduct money from players on each hole for fairways and greens missed, as well as for 3-putts (which would reward good steady play and not just lucky play); and, (6) limit the number of clubs they can bring with them to, say, five. Hmm, that sounds like an interesting event. Nah, they'll never go for it!
