Match Play needs a facelift

It almost makes too much sense, so it’ll probably never happen. Even before we got the sleep-inducing final at last week’s WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship, Phil Mickelson was thinking out loud about the event’s future.

“In my perfect world, I’d like to see the first three rounds, 54 holes, Wednesday through Friday, played stroke-play and knock it down to the top eight,” he said. “I feel like it gives the top players a little bit better chance of getting into the match-play format for the weekend.”

This has little to do with David Toms and Chris DiMarco, although their appearance in the final likely made a lot of people - myself included - start thinking about an extreme makeover. After last week’s snooze-fest, it’s time for some kind of change.

I wondered how long it would take before the whining started. The big boys can get off their fat cat butts and play their way into the weekend. The PGA already has enough stroke play events. WE also don't need the media shilling for the big boys either.

Why can't we accept the fact we lost. Like always another US players is only concerned about themselves and what is good for them and not what is fun for the fans, other players or those who don't complain. Maybe the NCAA hoops tourney could do something similar. Figure out who wins by the most points for the first 3 rounds.

Match play events (and all tournaments for that matter)are golf tournaments that are covered (or not) by the media. We don't need to rework them for the benefit of top players or to maintain the interest of instantly or incessantly bored writers. Golf is doing just fine, has been and will be.

what are you talking about, did you even watch it on Sunday? David Toms put on a show for everyone. Just because Tiger and Phil didn't make it the event needs to be restructured? I enjoyed watching the whole event and look forward to next year.
