Railing against Pebble's price hike
Monday March 28, 2005 | 04:02:33 137 words, 3378 views
Next week at this time, we’ll all reminisce about the days when you could play Pebble Beach for under $400. Ah, those were the days. In and out for just $395. Starting Friday, the Pebble Beach Company implements price hikes at each of its four courses by 4-5 percent. All of a sudden, playing Pebble will cost you $425. But I guess if you didn’t flinch at $395, what’s another 30 bucks? Other markups: Spyglass Hill (from $275 to $290), The Links at Spanish Bay (from $215 to $230) and Del Monte Golf Course (from $95 to $100). Having never played Pebble, I can’t definitively say $425 is a ridiculous figure. Most everyone I know who’s played the course has considered it money well spent. I just don’t know; $425 sounds like an awful lot for a round of golf, even at one of the world’s best courses. Am I wrong? Comments:

$425 for a round at Pebble Beach? I guess they wouldn't be charging that much if people wouldn't pay it. I couldn't justify that money, even if money wasn't an issue. Thanks to the Pebble Beach company for pricing themselves out of reach of the average golfer. I would probably pay that much or more for a round at Augusta, if I could get on there, but not for Pebble Beach. I can play it on my Tiger Woods computer game any time.

If playing the course and actually being there isnt worth the money then its not really an attraction. All I got after my brother went there was a towel(I love it)

.....ahh, the good 'ol days. When I could take customers and expense it....
I played the course years ago when it cost $85 and I was an 18 handicap. I enjoyed the apres golf a good deal more than the round. Strawberries & cream and Moet on the patio overlooking the 18th green and the Pacific with three people whose company I really enjoyed was fine. Without the friends it would have been just another fine California course. For $425 I could play Sand Piper down near Santa Barbara four times. That would be value. Even among the well off there is no cachet in saying "I paid $425 to play Pebble Beach." I have played Royal St. Andrews and a host of other fine courses for reasonable money and enjoyed them far more. It isn't the money - which is of course grand theft golf - it's playing a nice course with people you care about.
