2010 golf calendars ready and waiting for a home
Saturday October 31, 2009 | 09:25:55 309 words, 706 views
Walking through the mall the other day, I was amazed that the 2010 calendars are already ready and waiting to be purchased at bookstores. I haven’t given up on 2009 yet, but I guess it’s the “early bird gets the worm” mentality when it comes to getting those calendars on the shelves.
Nobody pumps out great golf calendars like Workman Publishing Co. out of New York.
The “365 Days of Golf 2010″ is a full-sized, picture-a-day premier hanging calendar for golfers. It features photos of more than 250 golf courses.
Each month works off of a theme. January looks at ... full post »
Columbia Sportswear makes great golf wear, too
Tuesday October 27, 2009 | 09:39:48 479 words, 603 views
The golf gear by Columbia Sportswear Co. got quite the baptism by fire. Or make that rain.
To test the technologies best known for the ski slopes, Columbia turned to the caddies at Bandon Dunes Golf Resort to break in their new rain gear. The caddies at Bandon Dunes see all kinds of weather on the remote Oregon coast four hours south of Columbia’s home base of Portland. The weather blowing in directly off the Pacific Ocean at the resort can bring hard rain and bone-numbing cold in between the rare moments of blissful sunshine.
The 300-plus caddies kept wearing ... full post »
Book "Jenkins At the Majors" a stroll down memory lane
Monday October 26, 2009 | 08:51:28 210 words, 579 views
Dan Jenkins has lived a charmed life, covering golf for the past 60 years.
The best you and I can do to peek into the details of his life would be to read the book, Jenkins At The Majors: Sixty Years of the World’s Best Golf Writing.
The book, released in May by Doubleday, chronicles classic stories from Jenkins about golf’s four majors, The Masters, the British Open, the U.S. Open and the PGA Championship.
Jenkins doesn’t report on the strokes that win golf tournaments but looks deeper at the people and the impact with a wry sense of humor. ... full post »
"Haunted Golf" a ghastly good read
Saturday October 24, 2009 | 15:21:06 272 words, 879 views
From the title alone, I knew I’d love the book “Haunted Golf.”
I’m almost as big a fan of ghosts and the supernatural as I am of golf. I love a good horror movie and a good scare. Just in time for Halloween, right?
This book feeds my fascination with both subjects. In fact when it came out, I was a bit disappointed. I have a running list for book ideas and this very topic was high on it. Authors Anthony Pioppi and Chris Gonsalves beat me to the punch with a look at some well-known golf resorts and courses ... full post »
The Golf Book by Sports Illustrated a winner
Friday October 23, 2009 | 10:06:28 278 words, 905 views
They say don’t judge a book by its cover.
Yet that old adage doesn’t apply with Sports Illustrated: The Golf Book. Its cover is a beautiful montage of the game’s greatest players. It’s just the first clue that this new hardcover coffee table book is a winner.
Brilliant photography and creative story-telling - two staples of Sports Illustrated - highlight the latest effort in a series of great sports books from SI starting with the Sports Illustrated 50: The Anniversary Book in 2004.
The Golf Book celebrates the wonderful history of the game, starting with a picture of the Spaulding ball ... full post »
Have a ball with The Scramble Scoop
Thursday October 22, 2009 | 13:46:59 233 words, 653 views
The Scramble Scoop is one of the more odd golf products I’ve ever received to review.
But that doesn’t mean the scoop doesn’t work. It’s just got a very small niche in the world of golf.
The Scramble Scoop is a ball retriever specifically made to be used in a scramble. If you’re a short hitter, you’re probably tired of stopping the cart at your ball to bend down and pick it up. It’s embarrassing enough to have hit a poor shot that won’t be used in competition, but the humiliation is just part of the problem. Years of bending ... full post »
Take in "Golf's Sacred Journey" with new book
Wednesday October 21, 2009 | 08:37:08 184 words, 883 views
The story behind the book, “Golf’s Sacred Journey, Seven Days at the Links of Utopia” is almost as inspiring as the story inside it.
Dr. David Cook, a respected mental guru, watched his self-published book sell more than 65,000 copies, mostly by word of mouth, before selling the story to a major publisher (Zondervan) last August.
Golf stars like Tom Lehman and Larry Mize have looked to the book for wisdom and inspiration about a game so complex that no one, not even Tiger Woods, has yet mastered it. Cook, who has 30 years of experience working with PGA, NBA, ... full post »
Sholf: the love child of golf and shuffleboard
Tuesday October 20, 2009 | 11:56:41 319 words, 870 views
I’m not afraid to admit I love golf.
I am a little bit apprehensive to admit I love shuffleboard, though. I remember playing it as a child. I haven’t tried it in years, but throw me on a cruise ship in the middle of the Caribbean and I’d love to battle in a shuffleboard extravaganza.
So where does that leave Sholf?
Believe it or not, Sholf is a real game. It’s a quirky cross between the two sports that you can play inside or out. The makers of Sholf even believe it could provide entertainment at a football tailgate, the ... full post »
Overindulge during spa week at these fab golf spas
Wednesday October 14, 2009 | 10:00:08 531 words, 1206 views
I’m man enough to admit that real men, especially golfers with bad backs like me, love spas. In honor of national spa week this week, here’s a peek inside the top spas I’ve visited the past 12 months.
• Spa Amira at The Homestead Resort, Glen Arbor, MI – The spa, opened in 2008, might feature the most spectacular view of any spa in the Midwest. It rests on a ridge high above Lake Michigan with views of the Sleeping Bear Dunes and the Manitou Islands. On warm summer days, treatments can be done outside next to the pool. The ... full post »
Discovering golf in southwest Ireland never gets old
Monday October 12, 2009 | 11:43:57 579 words, 1101 views
Just returned from my fourth trip to Ireland and I’m still riding the high of the experience. Those good vibes have helped me fight off the jetlag of a 14-hour travel day home.
You can go 100 times to the Emerald Isle and still discover something new every time.
Ireland is roughly the size of Indiana, not big by any means. It might as well be the size of California when it comes to trying to traverse its diverse terrain by car. Irish roads are narrow and twisting, lined with centuries-old stone walls. They give the landscape its old-world charm, ... full post »
Packing for a golf trip to Ireland no easy task
Thursday October 1, 2009 | 10:52:28 466 words, 1773 views
I should know how this works by now.
I’m packing today for my fourth golf trip to Ireland. Simple, yes?
Packing for a golf trip is never so. Anyone who plays the game knows the challenges between packing too much and too little. A couple of bad-weather days on the course can ruin you for the entire trip.
Going overseas to a place as wild as Ireland makes it even tougher. Here’s my strategies I’ve learned over the years:
1, Check your clubs, carry your clothes: Most airlines now charge extra for your checked luggage, but even before these ... full post »
Finding a higher purpose for used golf pencils
Wednesday September 30, 2009 | 20:41:55 299 words, 1580 views
As a believer in recycling, I’ve always hated how golf pencils are consumed.
You see golfers casually discard them after the round. They end up on the cart barn floor, in the trash can, in the trunk of the car, anywhere really.
Considering that golf pencils are free and useful for one simple purpose, it’s hard to get too bent out of shape about it all. Still, I can’t help but wonder how many trees are wiped out by several million of these little sticks.
Turns out, there are alternative uses for all those extra pencils. My daughter’s kindergarten teacher ... full post »
Mike Vago's "Miniature Book of Miniature Golf" a big hit
Monday September 28, 2009 | 12:09:17 264 words, 1473 views
When I was first offered a review copy of the Miniature Book of Miniature Golf by Mike Vago, I said no.
I wasn’t interested. It sounded like a gimmick. That’s what crossed my mind when I saw a press release about a golf book with a “golf course” inside.
Sometimes it’s better to open your mind than close it. Vago’s book has been an immediate hit in our house. My kids love it and I find it too creative not to like.
Vago, who supposedly spent his middle-school study hall mapping out elaborate miniature golf courses, has created a golf ... full post »
Ruletwentyone: A new golf towel that's not all wet
Tuesday September 22, 2009 | 21:27:31 292 words, 1414 views
I’ve never been one of those golfers who carries a wet towel to the green.
My putting has never been that exact. If there’s mud or sand on the ball, I just rub it off on the green (or my sock) and get on with my three-putting.
But I’ve changed my ways. I’m a convert. A towel travels with me wherever my ball goes. The reason?
The Ruletwentyone golf towel. It’s cool. It’s convenient. Most important, it works. The new towel, created by Joe Borgenicht, the founder and CEO of rulegolf, is named after Rule 21: ‘Cleaning your ball’ from the ... full post »
2009 Puerto Los Cabos World Cup seeks fishermen who love golf
Monday September 7, 2009 | 19:57:55 230 words, 1670 views
What happens when you mix celebrities, golf and fishing?
A party called the 2009 Puerto Los Cabos World Cup & Celebrity Golf Tournament will break out.
The inaugural tournament is set for Oct. 10-14 in Los Cabos on the tip of Mexico’s Baja Peninsula. For golfers who love to fish (or vice versa), this event sounds like a fabulous way to experience some of the best sport fishing and golf in the world. Puerto Los Cabos is a fairly new course (opened in 2007) with a unique twist. It features a front nine by Greg Norman and a back nine by ... full post »
