Do you remember your first par?

I don’t remember my first par, do you? But I’ll sure as heck remember my son’s.

A recent trip to Boyne Highlands Resort in northern Michigan, the site of this fall’s “Big Break X” on the Golf Channel (more on that later), provided the memorable moment.

We were playing the free par-3 course behind the resort, a 9-holer that rides up and down the ski slope. I even dragged my non-golfing wife along for a few shots.

It was the perfect family event. It was the kind of amenity that EVERY golf resort worth its salt should have. If they want to grow the game, this is it.

Anyway, I hadn’t taken my 6-year-old golfing all summer, so his shots were flying in all directions. On a 90-yard downhill hole, he push his driver into some thick, ankle-high grass. I propped his ball up, but he still only advanced it another 15 yards to the edge of the thick stuff.

Without waiting, he walked up and gave a mighty thrash. The ball screamed down the hill, a low-liner (just like his dad!). It rolled through the bunker, hit the top of the lip and popped up softly onto the green. It trickled into the hole like it was meant to be.

I yelled to my wife (who had given up by then) and was more excited than he was. My wife rushed in the camera.

The photo will be a perfect memory of that first par – for both of us.

That's an awesome story and you're so right; one of the best ways to grow the game is with family friendly par-3 courses.

Hang on a second...You propped his ball up. That's a penalty. Hate to say this about your little ankle-biter but NO PAR!!!!

LOL......"NOW" is a very good time to be playing those mid-to-upper MI courses! Cause in about 3 weeks, they'll be covered in snow till MAY! Just one more reason to live (and golf) in Florida!!!!! ;)
