The "Great Irish Links Challenge" in May features tournament rounds at Doonbeg, Ballybunion and Lahinch
The “Great Irish Links Challenge” isn’t just any golf tournament. It includes a holy trinity of Irish links – Ballybunion, Doonbeg and Lahinch. This has the making of becoming a world-class event.
Tournament organizers hope to attract up to 600 golfers from around the world for the tournament, set for May 22-25, 2011, (a Sunday through Wednesday). The entry fee is 545 Euros, which includes a welcome reception at the Lodge at Doonbeg, golf on the three courses, daily transport to the three courses, prizes and the final dinner. It does not include flights or accommodations.
Staying at Doonbeg, a five-star luxury links destination, would be the most fantastic way to experience this tournament. The allure of Doonbeg (see photos above and below) has always been its beautiful location, superb service and elegant accommodations. The suites are spacious enough to fit an eight-some, let alone ideal for a foursome. Book quickly because Doonbeg has only so many beds.
Lahinch (see main photo above) and Ballybunion are two of the top 10 links in the world.
Doonbeg General Manager Joe Russell said the idea was inspired in part by Golf World, which ranked all three courses among the world’s top 100. “We were all delighted to see nine Irish links courses featured,” Russell said in a statement. “Obviously with the three of us being so close together, there is an excellent opportunity to create an event such as this. I have no doubt it is going to be memorable.”
We all know Ireland has had its financial issues in this recession. The boom of Celtic Tiger was reduced to a purring kittycat. Thankfully, through it all, the Irish haven’t lost their charm. The “craic” (pronounced crack), code for fun, at the pubs and the smooth taste of a well-earned Guinness will always be an Irish tradition.
If you’ve been putting off your once-in-lifetime golf trip to Ireland, now’s the time to pull the trigger. See greatirishlinkschallenge.com or phone +353 65 9055602 for more information.
