Golf in March in Columbus, Ohio? You betcha
MARYSVILLE, Ohio – Who says a Michigander like me needs an airplane to find good golf in March?
I just hopped in a car and three hours later, presto! I was teeing it up at Darby Creek Golf Course, a strong Geoffrey Cornish/Brian Silva design on the northwest outskirts of Columbus.
The unbelievable weather in March kick-started the golf season a month or more ahead of schedule in the region. Darby Creek (see the clubhouse above) opened Feb. 2, and had a nice crowd in the parking lot when I arrived today.
The forecast looks like a rollercoaster this week – high of 50 tomorrow, 60 the following 24 hours and jumping to 70 degrees on Wednesday – but it won’t stop me from my tour of seven area courses. I don’t get to sneak inside the private gates of legendary places like Muirfield Village and Scioto, but it’s still a strong collection of public places.
This is a good week to be hanging out in central Ohio. The Buckeyes just earned their first trip to the NCAA Final Four since 2007. I’m more a Michigan Wolverine than a Buckeye, but when push comes to shove, I’m rooting for the Big Ten.
I’m also rooting – like a lot of my fellow golfers – that this balmy spring leads quickly into the spoils of summer.
