Feel young again thanks to travisMathew Golf Apparel
It could have been a coincidence, but I believe it was more than that.
The first time I wore my new pair of shorts and shirt from travisMathew I made three birdies in the first eight holes. It was a magical start at Cape Kidnappers in New Zealand, one of the world’s most famous courses.
I believe that a confluence of events made this average golfer superhuman for a brief period of time. Part of the inspiration was the beauty of my surroundings. It also came from the clothes I was wearing.
When you look good, you feel good, you play good. Right? That statement might not be grammatically correct, but it is factually true. I’m 40 years old, but I want to look and feel 20 again. It’s tiresome walking into a golf store and seeing one lame-looking golf polo after another.
That’s the void filled by travisMathew, a hip clothing line based in Huntington Beach, Calif. The brand, which finds inspiration from the cool SoCal surf culture, has only been around since 2008, but its rise has been meteoric in the golf world. I got my first taste at the 2013 PGA Show when I entered the travisMathew tour bus (read about it here).
I can honestly say the black Extinguisher shorts I wore that day, complemented by a gray belt, are the sharpest golf shorts I’ve ever owned. The Rosawesome white golf polo seems to be cut a bit trimmer than other styles I usually wear. I liked that the polo made me feel more athletic and fit like a glove.
I especially like how well the travisMathew outfits blend together. It’s easy for a fashion fool like me to dress to impress with travisMathew, while keeping it casual. There are some great plaids in the spring/summer stock, like the ‘JD’ (how could I not like one named after me?) and the ‘Consignment’. And I want to own a pair of shorts called ‘Spicoli’ just for the image the name conjures up. I haven’t tried the pants yet, but if they’re as comfortable as the shorts, I’m going shopping.
The company has signed an intriguing list of young talent to its roster. Yep, that was rookie James Hahn (photo above) going all ‘Gangnam style’ in his travisMathew outfit after a birdie on the 16th hole at the Waste Management Open in Scottsdale, Ariz., in February. Long-bombing Luke List (photo below) leads all major golf tours in driving distance, and Patrick Cantlay, who recently won the Web.com Tour’s Colombia Championship, is a super-star in the making.
The company also sells great casual wear like T-shirts, fedora hats, shoes and even cell-phone cases. My ‘Vintage’ black T-shirt with the company’s unique ‘M’ logo has already moved to the forefront of my off-course attire. If you can’t find travisMathew gear in your local pro shop, start complaining or shop online. As the Beastie Boys reminded my generation 25 years ago, it pays to keep up with “The New Style.”
