Willowbend Country Club introduces the spoils of vacationing on Cape Cod
MASHPEE, Mass. – My first impression of the incomparable Cape Cod is a luxurious one.
I’m sitting in an incredible villa suite at the Willowbend Country Club, a private 27-hole golf club and residential community in the Upper Cape. My villa features two beds in one room and an adjacent bathroom that’s bigger than many hotel rooms. The jetted tub looks more like a swimming pool.
The windows in the main living room showcase a beautiful brick patio overlooking the golf course and a fairway pond. The couch folds out into another bed in front of a fireplace and flat screen TV. There’s also a wet bar with a fridge and sink. The best part, though, is the golf course clubhouse, sprawling pool complex with a playground and outdoor basketball courts for kids and multi-court tennis facility (including a main stadium court) are just steps out the front door. The villas are open to members, their guests and those who book weddings and events at the club. Next week is the first annual Caddyshack Open, a golf tournament I’d love to experience.
Willowbend was purchased by former Club General Manager David Southworth and his partner Joe Deitch last year. Southworth Development has been leaving its mark at golf clubs around the world. In June, I played the spectacular Machrihanish Dunes Golf Club in Scotland (read about it here and here). The Ugadale Cottages and refurbished Ugadale Hotel in the village of Machrihanish Dunes and the remodeled Royal Hotel in nearby Campbeltown are all under the umbrella of Southworth properties.
As tempting as it will be to stay and play at Willowbend all week, I’ll be venturing out to explore the Cape as well, heading to the beach, taking a ferry to Nantucket, riding along on a sand dune tour and going whale watching. Of course, I’ll be teeing it up on several of the Cape’s 30-something courses, too.
In summer, there’s always so much to see and do. It’s too bad this wonderful lifestyle - and weather - doesn’t last all year long.
