Tune into the Golf Channel this week for the 2013 Solheim Cup at the Colorado Golf Club
It’s the biggest week in women’s golf.
And it’s certainly worth watching. The Golf Channel will air extensive coverage of the 2013 Solheim Cup at Colorado Golf Club in Parker. The four days of pre-tournament coverage leads into more than 27 hours of live match coverage Friday through Sunday.
I’m hooked on the Solheim Cup after attending the 2011 version at Killeen Castle in Ireland (read about it here). The Europeans made a magical Sunday comeback in singles to win 15-13, which should add even more fire to this year’s biennial competition. The Americans have captured eight of the previous 12 Cups and have never lost at home.
The Solheim Cup uses a format similar to the Ryder Cup, playing eight foursomes and eight four-ball matches on the first two days and 12 singles matches on the final day. The U.S. team needs to win 14 1/2 of the 28 points to reclaim the Cup. There is sure to be thousands of U.S. fans singing and flag-waving. It’s great fun.
There’s been some backlash that many of the world’s best players - the Asians - won’t be playing, but there will still be great golf and some dramatic moments. Will World No. 2 Stacy Lewis or Paula Creamer emerge as America’s leader? Will Michelle Wie justify her captain’s pick by Meg Mallon? Can European star, Suzann Pettersen, spearhead a huge upset? Golfchannel.com writer Randall Mell has broken down the U.S. team here and the European team here.
Even if you don’t follow women’s golf, it’s worth tuning in just for glimpses of the host private club. The Colorado Golf Club is a natural beauty with firm and fast fairways and some tempting risk-reward shots.
