Callaway, Titleist, and Ping: keep bragging. Tim: pipe down.
Thursday May 26, 2005 | 10:00:21 249 words, 1110 views
In his latest blog, Tim McDonald claims that all the high-tech golf equipment coming out by the truckloads are just rip-offs. He says, “you could go out and shoot just as well with those old persimmon drivers in the back of your garage you haven’t used for years.”
Okay, Tim. And I guess all the changes made to championship courses each year, to make them more difficult, are due to the fact that Tour players are just getting that much better? If that’s the case, then why is poor Gary Player tearing his hair out?
And if equipment has nothing to do ... full post »
Big Break III's Barbie pulls out of the LPGA Corning Classic
Thursday May 26, 2005 | 09:43:58 262 words, 3519 views
It was Barbie’s last chance…
Danielle Amiee of the Big Break III was supposed to tee it up today in the LPGA Corning Classic, but pulled out at the last minute, with a bunch of blah blah blah about a bad back. That’s right. Her big prize for winning Big Break III was *two* LPGA exemptions. And she’s decided not to play. Not only that, but The Golf Channel gave her the option to spend time in the booth chatting with the announcers, and her response was to refuse to take their calls. She’s refused all interviews, in fact, live ... full post »
Jam Boy Rules!
Wednesday May 18, 2005 | 09:56:31 344 words, 1469 views
Just caught up on the new posts by The Reluctant Jam Boy. If you haven’t already heard of him, he’s a blogging caddy somewhere in Virginia whose real name is Steve. Or maybe it’s Tom. I think he’s getting a little more guarded with his identity.
Regardless, his blog is one of the funniest things I’ve read in a long time. Laugh out loud funny. Tears streaming down your face funny. Snort your milk the wrong way funny.
Anyway, his stories remind me of an outing my husband and I had with a caddy of our own, a good guy named ... full post »
Annika Sorenstam and Michelle Wie breaking new ground--again
Monday May 16, 2005 | 12:06:41 295 words, 1069 views
A recap of the week in women’s golf:
Annika picked up her 60th tournament win, at the Chick-fil-A Championship, with a 10-stroke lead buffering her from her closest competitor, Candie Kung. Where do you suppose she keeps all those trophies? Has she built a new addition to house them? Man, Tiger Woods and Annika Sorenstam, both in the same generation. How did we get so lucky?
Meanwhile, Michelle Wie isn’t giving up on qualifying for the U.S. Open. Notice I didn’t say the Women’s U.S. Open.
There you go, guys. She’ll take the sponsor exemptions when they hand them to her, ... full post »
Demo Day: it's Callaway versus Mizuno Golf
Saturday May 14, 2005 | 21:50:51 346 words, 1637 views
Today was Demo Day at my club. Ah, I love me some Demo Day. It’s like a free-for-all at the toy store. It doesn’t matter that I just got some new X-18s last week–I’m still gonna be there come Demo Day.
We had two reps there today, from Callaway and Mizuno. I really felt bad for the Mizuno guy. Everyone was clustered around Mr. Callaway, trying out his fancypants computer launch angle analyzer and the new Fusion irons, and poor Mizuno was kind of left out in the cold.
I stopped feeling so bad for Mr. Mizuno when I asked if I ... full post »
The eagle has landed
Thursday May 12, 2005 | 14:15:16 251 words, 984 views
Armed with my new clubs, my new swing, and even some new balls, I went out on the course yesterday and accomplished a new first.
Uh huh, that’s right. If you read the title of this blog, you already know what it is. I made my first-ever eagle. It was on a 279-yard par 4. My drive went a nice straight 200 yards, then I hit a pitching wedge onto an elevated green. Because it was elevated, I couldn’t see the result. I just heard a loud “clunk” and knew it had hit the flagstick.
My home course, for whatever unfathomable reason, ... full post »
Why moms need stress relief
Tuesday May 10, 2005 | 20:49:15 268 words, 984 views
Not long ago I wrote an article for TravelGolf.com about why more women should be playing golf. One of the benefits I listed was stress relief, as in relief from the stress of your job. “Picture your pointy-haired boss’s head on the tee and swing away,” I directed my readers.
I no longer have a job in the traditional sense of the word, i.e., a job that entails regular paychecks, raises, promotions, or other such perks. And I don’t have a boss, either, in that same traditional sense. Not one boss, anyway. I have three.
They’re aged 6, 3, and 2, and ... full post »
Playing with the new Callaway X-18s
Sunday May 8, 2005 | 17:21:26 284 words, 1075 views
I’m not an equipment rater, but I know what I like. After playing with the same irons for the last five years, I decided to upgrade. I shopped around and hit some demos, and finally decided on the new Callaway X-18s.
For one thing, they promise just what I need—more forgiveness and better accuracy. For another, they’re really pretty.
After I placed my order, I waited for two weeks. Finally the pro shop called, to say that they had arrived, but they were the wrong clubs. Callaway had sent me men’s clubs by accident.
Another week went by, and I got ... full post »
Big Break III's Barbie misses cut at Michelob Ultra Open
Thursday May 5, 2005 | 17:55:35 120 words, 1429 views
Danielle Amiee of Big Break III fame missed the cut at the Michelob Ultra Open, with two rounds of 79, 77. She was in good company the first day–even Annika was struggling, at +5, but pulled it together and ended up T12. Cristie Kerr was the eventual winner, blowing away the rest of the field at 8 under.
In an interview before the tournament, Danielle was quoted as saying “I don’t know why I got the short straw and was cast as the villain on this show.” Maybe she and Omarosa should get together and ponder this question.
We didn’t get to ... full post »
Cheryl Ladd speaks for all the "Token Chicks"
Wednesday May 4, 2005 | 09:15:34 306 words, 1246 views
Remember the blond on Charlie’s Angels? No, not Cameron Diaz. I’m talking about the vintage 1970s blue-eyeshadow disco-era Charlie’s Angels. Cheryl Ladd played the fourth angel after Farrah Fawcett ditched the show. Well apparently she’s a golfer. And a pretty funny one at that.
I just finished reading her new book, Token Chick: A Woman’s Guide to Golfing with the Boys, in which she describes her experiences playing in celebrity pro-ams and the like. She always winds up being the only female in the group, hence the title, Token Chick. As the token chick here at Blog Central, and often on ... full post »
