I’m not an equipment rater, but I know what I like. After playing with the same irons for the last five years, I decided to upgrade. I shopped around and hit some demos, and finally decided on the new Callaway X-18s.

For one thing, they promise just what I need—more forgiveness and better accuracy. For another, they’re really pretty.

After I placed my order, I waited for two weeks. Finally the pro shop called, to say that they had arrived, but they were the wrong clubs. Callaway had sent me men’s clubs by accident.

Another week went by, and I got another call saying they were in. But I was out of town. Yet another week went by, and I was finally united with my pretty new clubs.

I took them out on the course yesterday. My observations: they’re a little heavier than my old X-14s. But 1) they’re a little easier to hit. Even the ones that didn’t feel like butter still went pretty much where I wanted them to go. Normally I can count on my topped shots spinning off into the Kingdom of Far, Far Away. But the big sweet spot on these clubs means I can pretty much hit it anywhere but right on the hozel itself and do okay. The perfect clubs for my imperfect swing. 2) Callaway didn’t lie about the accuracy thing. The ball went where I aimed it, not any longer, but nice and straight, no wobbles. And 3) did I mention they’re really pretty?

After a night alone in my cold garage, I think they must be lonely. I must go now and pay them a visit.
