4 reasons to watch the McDonald's LPGA Championship

It’s shaping up to be a great week in women’s golf.

Why? Because the LPGA Championship—oops, I mean the McDonald’s LPGA Championship Presented by Coca-Cola, will be played this weekend. Normally that wouldn’t cause such a big blip on my golf radar, but this one’s a little different, for several reasons.

1. It’s a major. It might be quite a mouthful, with BOTH “McDonald’s” and “Coca-Cola” in it, but it’s still a major. I wonder if there’s room to add one more sponsor to the title. Why not? How about the McDonald’s LPGA Championship Presented by Coca-Cola and Supported by Hanes Her Way JogBras?

I just love it when news outlets refuse to play by the rules and just call it what it is, the LPGA Championship. It’s like ordering a “small cappuccino” at Starbucks. That’s right, it’s small, not “tall,” by God!

2. Annika’s defending her two-time title and going for her 62nd tournament win. If she does win, she’ll be the first LPGA player to three-peat a major. She’ll also be halfway to a Grand Slam. Extremely cool stuff.

3. She’ll be joined on the field by Michelle Wie. This hasn’t sat well with all the LPGA members. But Karrie Webb said it best, “At the age she’s at, she’s playing unbelievably well. She’s exciting, she’s a story and people are out here to watch. That helps the LPGA.” Two-time LPGA Champion Laura Davies added, “She’s great for the tour, and anyone who says she doesn’t like it is very shortsighted. She’s exciting, and we need excitement.” Thank you! Someone finally acknowledges that publicity HELPS the LPGA!

4. And if that wasn’t exciting enough, Big Break III’s Cindy Miller will be playing in this tournament as well. Miller earned her spot by winning last year’s Golf For Women Magazine LPGA Teaching and Club Professional Championship. She has her eye on qualifying for the U.S. Women’s Open, too. I guess she never needed that Big Break. Good for you, Cindy!

Random musing: so why DO the ladies get saddled with mouthfuls like McDonald’s LPGA Championship Presented by Coca-Cola, or the Weetabix Women’s British Open, instead of far-classier names like “The Masters,” or “the Open”?

But I guess the guys have their own cross to bear. The Cialis Western Open, for instance. Snicker snicker.

Cindy earned an exemption by winning the 2004 Golf For Women Magazine LPGA Teaching and Club Professional Championship...It had nothing to do with BB3.

The reason for the McDonald's LPGA Championship hosted by Coca-Cola on Buick Country Club's Kraft Mac 'n Cheese Extra Cheesey Course, sponsored by Oil of Olay, should be obvious. It's the same reason Michelle Wie does and should get exemptions to tournaments: the LPGA has a hard time selling it's product. Unlike The Masters, which can run it's program without commercials just to annoy Martha Burke, the LPGA does not have the cash to maintain a viable tour without lots of sponsorship and selling of naming rights.

Not that this is restricted to the LPGA. Just look at any major sports arena built in the last twenty years, or any of the College Bowl games. The FedEx Orange Bowl brought to you by General Motors, played at 3-Com Park on Cisco's Candlestick Point. It gets crazier every year.

I say give me more Michelle Wie and less seventeen name/sponsor tournaments.
