Take Your Daughter to the Course: July 11-17

Today marks the beginning of an important week in the golf world. And no, I’m not talking about Michelle Wie playing in the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship, although that is a pretty important event.

Think back a few years to the day you first picked up a club. Who was standing by your side? If you’re like most golfers, odds are it was a parent.

Well if you’re now a parent yourself, the time has come to return the favor. No, I don’t mean make a tee time for your parents. I mean call your local course and take advantage of “Take Your Daughter to the Course Week.”

More than 1,200 courses across the country, public and private, are participating in Take Your Daughter to the Course Week July 11-17 by offering free lessons and clinics for little girls under 17, as well as free green fees as long as they’re accompanied by a paying adult.

I’ll be honest, not all courses get excited by the presence of children. I’ve gotten the stink eye more than once when I’ve brought my little ones to the range. But this week, at least, courses will welcome your girls with open arms.

And actually, if you don’t get a chance this week, why wait till next year? Once she’s familiar with course/range etiquette, there’s no reason why she can’t come along any time.

Take advantage of this great chance to teach your daughter your favorite sport. Who knows, you might one day watch her tee it up in the U.S. Amateur Public Links.

Just two weeks ago, I was talking to people around the office (and, later, my kids) about how the USGA and various clubs/organizations say they recognize the need to encourage junior golf, but too few courses follow up those words.
This is a great idea. I'll try to drop a note about it into the Chapel Hill News, with the wish that more clubs in NC had stepped up and signed on; perhaps next year they will.
