The dog days of summer: Solheim Cup and Big Break IV a nice reprieve

So all the majors have been played, maybe you’re thinking the golf world has gone dormant. Take heart, my friends, the best—well, maybe not the best, exactly—the decent is yet to come. Here’s what’s happening in the next few weeks: Tuesday, August 23rd: My birthday. My husband has promised me a round of golf, now if only God would promise me good weather. What, that’s not a major event in the golf world? What’s your point? September 9-11: The Solheim Cup. Nancy probably didn’t get my memo, so it’s doubtful we’ll see Michelle Wie out there representing our country, but this contest could still make for some interesting viewing. I’m curious to see the matchups: who’s the unlucky soul who faces Annika in round 1? If you don’t get The Golf Channel, you won’t get to see any live coverage, by the way. If you do, you’ll get treated to all-day golf goodness. Here’s something to get your nationalistic hackles up: European captain Catrin Nilsmark declared certain US team members to be “brats,” last go-around, before the matches even began. Brats? She’s lucky we’re not sending our brats. Put Pressel and Wie on the team and then we’ll see how she likes brats. September 13: And speaking of The Golf Channel, set your Tivos—the Big Break IV premieres on the 13th at 9 pm. Last season was Ladies Only. This season’s it’s a team-format USA vs. Europe, played at Carnoustie in Scotland. I’m looking forward to this one because I’ve played Carnoustie myself. Will one of these guys be able to pull off the 60-yard holeout I managed on Number 18? I doubt it. I’d like to say it was for eagle, but, well, after three in the Van de Velde burn, let’s just say it was a good finish.
Catrin Nilsmark, pictured here, also called Meg Mallon “over the hill.” Mallon went on to win the 2004 US Women’s Open. Comments:

Perhaps we will see Michelle Wie next year in the Nike Cup featuring top women golfers from the Western Hemisphere vs. the Eastern Hemisphere. I'm not sure about the name, but the omission of Michelle Wie from this year's American team will certainly provide an impetus for instituting a competition that would include Asian golfers--and I am sure that Nike would be very happy to do what it takes to bring this about.

To Jim: What's your point about devising a game for Asian golfers? Michelle Wie is an Asian American, still American albeit she is an amateur golfer. She was born in Hawaii, the last time I was there, it was part of the United States.
Besides the Solheim's rules, Lopez is not going to budge on her opinions and thoughts about Michelle Wie. Leave a comment: |
