Annika Sorenstam taking care of business

Monday January 30, 2006 | 16:54:06 296 words, 2076 views
Win a free golf book!
Annika Sorenstam is adding a new item to her resume: she’s going to design a golf course. And why not? Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Davis Love III, Gary Player, why should they have all the fun? If you want to play her course, however, you’re in for a long trip—it’ll be part of the “forthcoming Euphoria Golf Estate and Hydro, which will rise on a site north of Pretoria.” Pretoria, South Africa, that is. This is actually her second attempt: her first was the Mission Hills Golf Resort in China, which she described as a “shot-maker’s course.” “There are very few courses ... full post »

Michelle Wie to win a men's major--wanna bet?

Sunday January 22, 2006 | 12:12:53 254 words, 2068 views
Pretty sure Michelle Wie has no place on the men’s tour? Now you can put your money where your mouth is. On Wednesday, UK bookmaker Pagebet (the oldest independent bookmaker in the country) opened a book on Michelle Wie winning not just a men’s event, but a men’s major. The odds are pretty telling—2 to 1. Pagebet commercial manager David Grouse said that after learning about Michelle Wie, they wanted to be the first to open the book. “We have specialist golf experts to determine our odds,” Grouse said. “We came to the conclusion it was logical Michelle should stand a great ... full post »

A day in the life of the golfing mom

Monday January 16, 2006 | 11:15:47 216 words, 972 views
I made a critical error in judgment yesterday. I gave my 2-year-old some juice…in the wrong cup! The resulting meltdown woke up my grandmother, which is pretty weird since she died nine years ago. (Sorry, Grandma!) A rookie mistake, I know. Any self-respecting mom knows that when a tot requests a drink, mom is supposed to run through the available sippy cups like a sommelier presenting wine options. But I was in a rush and got lazy. Lesson learned. Anyhoo…I realized the day was just going to go from bad to worse if I didn’t turn off Cartoon Network and get the ... full post »

It's Michelle Wie versus Vijay Singh at the Sony Open

Wednesday January 11, 2006 | 09:24:40 227 words, 3515 views
This weekend it’s Michelle versus Vijay. No, no one really thinks Michelle Wie will actually be able to take the title away from defending champion Vijay Singh. But everyone’s eyes are on her to see if she’ll be able to make the cut in her third straight Sony Open. It’s funny how history repeats itself. Not that long ago, Singh was the defending champion when a woman joined the field. It was 2003, at the Bank of America Colonial. And the thought of possibly being paired with Annika Sorenstam was enough to make him pull out of the event altogether. “If I’m drawn ... full post »

Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, who needs em? Mercedes Championships still good TV

Monday January 9, 2006 | 11:42:17 272 words, 1675 views
I must differ with my esteemed colleague Doug Carey. He found the Mercedes Championships a “yawner.” I, on the other hand, was glued to my seat. And it’s not like there wasn’t anything better to watch. Last night’s TV schedule was packed: the Duke/Wake game, which as a Duke fan I’m loathe to admit I skipped. Not to mention a new Desperate Housewives thrown into the mix. What’s a sports-loving girl to do? I picked the MC because I’m a sucker for Stuart Appleby. He lost his wife after six years of marriage, then remarried and has a baby, plus has ... full post »

Michelle Wie faces tough questions on Mark Rolfing's Golf Hawaii

Tuesday January 3, 2006 | 16:59:35 213 words, 1564 views
Anybody catch Mark Rolfing’s Golf Hawaii last night on the Golf Channel? He had Michelle Wie as a guest, and asked her “which would give you more satisfaction, making the cut in a PGA tournament, or winning on the LGPA?” Way to put her on the spot, Mark! Let’s see: choose to make the PGA cut and tick off the entire LGPA membership: “What, we’re not good enough now?” Or Opt for the LPGA win and hear the jeers: “So much for your goal of playing on the PGA Tour someday!” But Michelle wasn’t falling for it. With her usual finesse, she replied, “I ... full post »
