Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, who needs em? Mercedes Championships still good TV
Monday January 9, 2006 | 11:42:17 272 words, 2024 views
I must differ with my esteemed colleague Doug Carey. He found the Mercedes Championships a “yawner.” I, on the other hand, was glued to my seat. And it’s not like there wasn’t anything better to watch. Last night’s TV schedule was packed: the Duke/Wake game, which as a Duke fan I’m loathe to admit I skipped. Not to mention a new Desperate Housewives thrown into the mix. What’s a sports-loving girl to do? I picked the MC because I’m a sucker for Stuart Appleby. He lost his wife after six years of marriage, then remarried and has a baby, plus has another one on the way. Now that’s drama far better than anything Desperate Housewives can dish up. Plus he has a cool accent. Plus I love it when anyone puts the screws in Vijay Singh. Vijay plays out of his mind in round 4, shooting 66. Appleby answers by forcing a playoff. They head back to the tee at Kapalua’s 18–the famous downhill, downwind, longest hole on the PGA Tour. Both hit great drives. Both go for the green in two. Appleby overshoots and ends up in a bunker. Singh puts his approach just off the green, then chips on to nine feet from the pin. Appleby plays a spectacular bunker shot, laying it to within inches of the hole. Singh pushes his birdie putt past. Appleby knocks his birdie putt in. And it’s over, Appleby’s a three-peater and $1.08 million richer, and Singh takes second. It was a beautiful moment. And truth be told, I’ll catch Desperate Housewives later. That’s what Tivo is for. Comments:

I agree..even without those "big" names, this year's MC was an exciting one...with the new greens & trade winds, and the +80 scores posted by Gore...EXCITING!

She hates Vijay because he has opinions and is not afraid to express them (oh, and the fact that he is not white).

Look, stop playing the race card -- it's disgusting and inaccurate. It's my belief that minorities who accuse white people of bigotry at the drop of a hat are themselves bigots. What bothers this little feminist is that he's a man who dared to transgress against the rules of feminism.

There is still a lot of racism in this game. It obviously cuts both ways. But seems to me guys like VJ often end up on the recieving end. Monty has also been accused of cheating recently but it hardly seems to come up when we talk about him. But VJ's incident 20 years ago is always the focal point. It's sad to see the golf writers not giving this guy a break. Thankfully most of the fans have a different take on this.

Gold,
I'm going to refrain from getting testy with you because I still think you may be a man of good will. Singh takes it on the chin because he dared be POLITICALLY-INCORRECT in what he said about Sorenscam. If you know anything about our modern times, you'll know that PCness is the dominant social force -- it colors everything. The discrimination and bigotry evident nowadays redounds upon white people.
We have a bet going. Does Tiger own his
own airplane or lease per trip? If he does own his plane, what model and manufacturer? Thanks ch
She is bashing VJ Singh because he is a complete a__hole I have personally watched him push past kids after a practice round wanting a quick autograph when there were maybe 4-5 kids total standing around waiting for the players to finish. If a player won't take the time to sign an autograph for a kid in hawaii that is pretty pathetic. No race card here because Justin Leonard is just as bad.
