Michelle Wie at the US Open--the men's US Open
Tuesday May 16, 2006 | 00:14:00 232 words, 33828 views
Michelle Wie had a big day today. First, she made it through local qualifying for the US Open—notice I didn’t say the US Women’s Open. Well, okay, she didn’t just make it through, she won medalist honors, beating out the other 40 competitors—including her own former coach, Casey Nakama. As my good friend Putt4Par would say, that’s pretty cool beans.
According to the USGA, this makes her the first woman ever to get through local qualifiers. No, she’s not in the tournament yet. She still has to play a 36-hole sectional qualifier in New Jersey on June 5.

The best Mother's Day gift ever
Sunday May 14, 2006 | 14:37:28 250 words, 1638 views
In my opinion, there are two types of mothers: those who can’t get enough of their kids, and those who can. I’m one of the second kind.
That’s why I’m so pleased that my husband’s Mother’s Day gift this year was a spa gift certificate and a reservation for a fondue restaurant. (Yeah, yeah, I had to make the reservation myself, but one can’t have everything, can one?)

Annika Sorenstam misses a cut: what is the world coming to?
Friday May 12, 2006 | 21:44:05 194 words, 1307 views
Annika missed her first cut in four years today at the Michelob Ultra Open, after shooting two consecutive 73s to finish +4.
The world’s number-one ranked female hasn’t missed a cut since 2002, at the Weetabix Women’s British Open. That’s 68 consecutive events, people. Her last missed cut before that? 1999.
It wasn’t any single hole that did her in; no doubles or triples we can point to. Instead, it was just unsteady putting that led to nine bogies.
“This year, it’s really not going my way at all, so I’ve got to keep on going, keep on grinding. It’s ... full post »
Eight times is the charm: Michelle Wie makes the cut in a men's event
Friday May 5, 2006 | 11:40:34 413 words, 5871 views
Currently tied at seventeenth place, Michelle Wie has made history once again, becoming the youngest female to make the cut in a men’s event—the Asian Tour’s SK Telecom Open.
The high school junior certainly isn’t the first woman to play against the boys. We all know about Annika Sorenstam’s bid at the Bank of America Colonial in 2003, where four strokes kept her from making the cut. But you may not know that big hitter Laura Davies of England, with 20 LPGA wins (four of which were majors) tried her hand at the Korean Open on the Asian Tour in ... full post »
