My daughter has a birthday coming up. It’s a tough one: the big oh-eight. I say it’s tough because try shopping for an 8-year-old girl’s birthday present. They call them “tweeners": not ready for the pre-teen stuff like makeup and the like, but My Little Pony may have reached maximum shelf life. If you follow women’s golf, this is your lucky day. Today begins the McDonald’s LPGA Championship—the year’s second major—where we’ll get to see Michelle Wie battle defending three-peater Annika Sorenstam, Morgan Pressel, Paula Creamer, Lorena Ochoa, and all the other LPGA also-rans. Last year when Michelle Wie teed it up at the LPGA Championship, several LPGA members squawked that she had no business being there. That the LPGA Championship should be reserved for, well, the LPGA. She shut them up by finishing second–at age 15. This year we’re not hearing as much complaining, even though Michelle still isn’t an actual LPGA member. ... full post »

Ask a lady golfer what her perfect day is, and she’ll likely reply with something like this: sleeping a little late in a luxuriously soft goosedown featherbed, followed by a large, leisurely breakfast that she doesn’t have to clean up after, followed by a tee time in low-humidity, 72 degree weather, then a fabulous spa appointment with a ridiculously handsome massage therapist named Sven, and last but not least a romantic dinner in a charming, historied restaurant.
