Scratch that last post: Michelle Wie withdraws from John Deere Classic
Friday July 14, 2006 | 17:53:55 205 words, 5711 views
I’d like to predict that there are better days ahead for Michelle Wie, but with my talent for predictions, I’d hate to end up actually causing her to be cursed.
She just became the fifth player to withdraw from the John Deere Classic—at +2 after nine holes, she left the course in obvious pain and apparent nausea, and was taken to a hospital. Dehydration? Heat exhaustion and stomach cramps? A hip injury? Food poisoning? We’ll know more soon.
She dug herself into a hole yesterday with a score of 77. But today might have been better. With an even-par round through eight ... full post »
Will Michelle Wie make the cut at the John Deere Classic? (Warning: spoiler alert!)

I feel an urge to make a bold prediction: Michelle Wie will make the cut this weekend at the John Deere Classic.
It’s her second John Deere attempt there in Silvis, Illinois, and her fifth attempt on the PGA Tour. This time might be the charm.
Why?
For one thing, the field is somewhat weakened by the fact that the men’s British Open (yes, yes, all you purists, I know it’s officially called the Open Championship) is coming up. All the big names have already flown over to Hoylake, England, to prepare. Less competition = an easier cut line.
For another, after making ... full post »

Tune your TV to CBS today at 3 o’clock, and watch the ladies battle it out at the HSBC Women’s World Match Play Championship.
We’ve got some classic match-ups going on. Paula Creamer, after defeating last year’s inaugural champion Marisa Baena yesterday 5 and 3, took on Morgan Pressel in Round 3, winning 3 and 1, wrist injury and all. Does this mean Chris Baldwin will start telling us how Paula Creamer is better than Morgan Pressel now, will always be better than Morgan Pressel? Creamer will face Karrie Webb in the quarterfinal matches this afternoon.

The US Women's Open: will someone get it right?
Saturday July 1, 2006 | 12:56:44 188 words, 3034 views
She won the British Women’s Open last year. She won last week’s Wegman’s. She has seven top 10s and earnings of $650,000 this year alone, $3.5 million overall. She’s sitting at number 7 on the LPGA’s money list—the same spot currently occupied by Tiger Woods over on the PGA Tour. Something tells me that she, along with her thirty-one countrywomen on the LPGA, are here to stay.
So why, oh why, can’t the announcers at the US Women’s Open figure out how to pronounce Jeong Jang’s name?
Granted, it’s not quite as self-explanatory as “Birdie Kim.” That’s a gimme. But still, it’s ... full post »
