Ladies earn bragging rights and more beating the men in Wendy's 3-Tour Challenge
It was played November 10, but unless you were on site in Las Vegas at the Rio Secco Golf Club, you had to wait until December 19 and 20 to see the action and find out who won. That secret is closely held until the week before Christmas when each nine is aired over a two-day period.
Proving once again that women are worth watching — we’re talking here about on the golf course so stop snickering — the LPGA team of Cristie Kerr, Suzann Pettersen and Natalie Gulbis ultimately triumphed over Stewart Cink, Bubba Watson and Freddie Couples playing for the PGA and last year’s winners Fred Funk, Nick Price and Jay Haas who represented the Champions Tour.
How did they do it? Going into Sunday’s second nine, they were in last place. Their birdie putts just refused to drop while the Champions were all over it with a three shot lead.
Then the girls got it going and Cristie Kerr’s putter and precision chipping caught fire on the last nine and yes, proving once again, these ladies were much more than a hot body and a pretty face.
But whoever won, it was great fun to watch and all for a good cause. The tournament helps raise $3.600,000 for the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption. As the broadcast rolled out, we saw stories of great kids who are in foster care looking for homes. Thomas, founder of Wendy’s, was himself an adopted child.
This is a three-player skins team event with the PGA playing the course at full length, followed by the Champions hitting from shorter tees and the LPGA in front of them. Each threesome consisted of a player from each tour and players wore microphones so we were tuned into what they were saying from strategy discussions to personal banter.
This is the 5th time the LPGA has won since the event began 18 years ago. The Champions have won it six times and the PGA seven times.
Let’s say it for the girls.

Are you trying to put one over on me? I know golf inside and out, so that won't work.
Just so you know, however (this is from someone who used to have a very low handicap), it's like night and day.
I still would like to know what inspired the "just a few yards" comment. I'll give you credit and assume you weren't lying, but it still means that you have some work to do. I mean, shouldn't a golf writer actually know, uh . . . well, golf?
Happy New Year.
