Lori's Golf Shoppe 2 near Pinehurst goes all out for the ladies
Ever walk into a pro shop looking for the ladies section and have to ask where it is only to be told, “Over there in the corner.” With the mix of items for men and women fiercely geared towards the guys, it’s refreshing when entrepreneurs like Heather and Bob Sweed take a leap of faith and launch Lori’s Golf Shoppe 2 for women.
Located in Aberdeen, N.C., less than 1.2 miles from the Members Clubhouse at Pinehurst Country Club, Bob said, “We got the idea from Lori Desimone, a teaching pro who founded Lori’s Golf Shoppe in Calabash, North Carolina.”
Lori explained, “Often as I would be setting up for events I would keep hearing the ladies saying they wished the pro shops sold more women’s golf clothes.”
So she acted opening Lori’s Golf Shoppe in 1997, a 400-square-foot retail operation selling accessories, golf bags and other women’s items. Today her store occupying 4,800 square feet in a shopping plaza, sells a wide range of women’s golf apparel plus shoes, bags, socks, tees, gloves, balls, hats, and a good selection of golf gifts from sparkling ball markers to jewelry like the Abigale Lynn ball marker bracelets.
Lori, who has now been in business for more than 10 years, had started out as assistant pro at Arcadian Shores Golf Club in Myrtle Beach. She also ran ladies golf trips to Pinehurst and it was on one of these trips that she met the Sweeds.
“When Lori told us she got a lot of customers from Pinehurst, we joked that we should open a Lori’s in this part of the state,” said Bob. “We had come to Pinehurst from New Hampshire because we always loved it here. It’s absolutely one of the most beautiful places to live in the country. The only thing we missed was our favorite Italian restaurant – a place where you could feel your arteries hardening after indulging in all those rich, cheesy dishes.”
“We talked with her about the fact there was really no place dedicated to lady golfers in the Pinehurst area,” said Bob. Establishing a store in Pinehurst and establishing a partnership with Lori was a natural.”
“Our learning curve in opening our own store could have taken years without Lori’s guidance,” said Bob. “With Lori’s help, we hit the ground running.”
Heather added, “Lori’s help was critical in guiding us to what worked, what people wanted. For example we might wonder if these capris were too funky or those shorts too short. She helped steer us in the right direction. Our customers have a high expectation that when they come into our shop they will find things that are high quality, well priced and pretty. We look for items that work for our demographics.”
Bob said, “We benefit from Lori’s relationship with the reps. They respect the way Lori does business so that carries over into our business. If we don’t have a particular size for a customer, we can check with Lori and if she has it, we get it the next day.”
Popular lines at Lori’s2 include Jamie Sadock, Cutter & Buck, Spanner Golf, Callaway Golf, bette & court, EP Pro, Tail, Lopez, Sport Haley and many others. Unique accessories include everything from handbags and markers to cart bags, umbrellas, head covers and jewelry.
So what’s hot for fall?
“We are selling a lot of different grays, plums and purples as well as animal prints and paisleys, says Heather. “Chocolates and browns died down for a while but are coming back strong.”
Stocking plus sizes as well as extra small, Heather explains she features lines appealing to older ladies as well as younger golfers. “Attractive styles for older and larger women often get lost in the shuffle,” she says. “We want everyone who comes into our shop to find something they like that suits them.”
Lori’s Golf Shoppe 2 is located on NC Highway 5 in the Food Lion Plaza. For more information, see lorisgolfshoppe2.com.
