I assume it's the fact that the pool of high school girls interested in playing college golf is fairly small that has led so many colleges to recruit beyond our borders. Although there are very good opportunities for high school girls to get scholarships and play golf in college, it has gotten more difficult due to international recruiting. I would guess well over 1/3 of the players on D1 teams are coming from other countries. Of course U.S. colleges are one of the feeder systems into the Futures Tour and the LPGA, which explains the International flavor of those tours.

With so many opportunities for juniors to get free or inexpensive instruction, as well as free or inexpensive playing privileges, you have to wonder why more American girls aren't getting serious about golf. I realize kids have tons of choices for how to spend their time, so maybe it's just a matter of time until programs like the LPGA Girls Golf Clubs help to increase the pool here in the United States.

I had the pleasure of coaching a young lady who now plays for Vanderbilt. She was able to stay in the north for high school, venture out during the winter months for tourneys, play a full schedule during the warm weather and graduate in the Cum Laude society from our school. Work ethic? Yes ma'am.
